Desperately in need of a sweet distraction from the entertaining albeit extremely anxiety-inducing event of playoff baseball? Your wish has been granted: This weekend, you can take a break from biting your nails by biting into a stunning layered confection created by Lady M Luxury Cakes.
The elegant Big Apple-based bakery is hosting a pop-up party this weekend in a food truck outside Baccarat in River Oaks District. Attendees can sample the bake shop's signature mille crêpes—20 hand-made crepes interspersed with layers of pastry cream and crowned with a caramelized top—plus a green tea variety made with Japanese matcha, and a framboise au chocolat cake (chocolate mousse stacked upon a thin layer of raspberry compote and chocolate sponge and decorated with raspberry gelée and cocoa ganache).
But that's not all: Perhaps most exciting will be the debut of a new flavor, a marron mille crêpes—alternating crepes and chestnut cream dusted with powdered sugar. All of the aforementioned flavors with the exception of the framboise au chocolat can be pre-ordered as whole cakes, should you be feeding a whole family.
At a media preview, this sugar freak/writer quickly realized the mobile bakery was hardly your run-of-the-mill food truck. Illuminated by Baccarat chandeliers and three-dimensional art pieces by acclaimed artist and architect Kurt Wenner, the Lady M pop-up on wheels boasts a design that appropriately matches its tony baked goods.
I indulged in the OG, whose alternating layers of cream and eggy cakes made for a bite that was simultaneously rich and delicately fun—sort of like an Astros playoff game. With some restraint, I managed to save a wedge to savor for game five. With some luck, the crepes will outnumber the innings.
Look for the Lady M pop-up from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Baccarat at River Oaks District, 4444 Westheimer Road.
