Plus, big wine winners.

Over the weekend, a suspected drunk driver slammed into the Main Chick food truck in Spring. The truck shut down operations for several days as several employees working with hot oil inside at the time of the crash were seriously injured. Per a report from ABC13, one woman was thrown into 375-degree grease and has severe burns across her upper body.

Operations were back in action by Tuesday, and Main Chick has set up a GoFundMe, which has already raised more than $13,000, to help pay for its employees’ medical bills.

Houston’s second-oldest Mexican restaurant, The Spanish Village Restaurant, is closing, owner Abhi Sreerama announced on social media this week.

Spanish Village first began serving Tex-Mex classics in Third Ward back in 1953. Ownership has changed hands multiple times over the years, with Sreerama taking over in 2018—his wife, Ishita Chakravarty, took over as chef.

“When you walk into Spanish Village, the decades of memories resound with every step,” Sreerama wrote on social media. “When I purchased the restaurant, that's what convinced me to pull the trigger. In the end, though, a mixture of issues made this decision necessary, primarily the failing building.”

The restaurant will be open for reservations only through July 17. And for the folks mourning the community staple, there is a little hope: Sreerama wrote that they are in discussions with a few buyers to keep the “Spanish Village brand and recipes to hopefully keep the tradition alive.”

Last week, Wine Spectator announced its 2021 Restaurant Award winners, celebrating more than 2,900 restaurants across the globe for excellence, in spite of the pandemic, including 24 Houston spots.

Two local steakhouses, Mastro's Steakhouse and Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, have earned top honors: "Grand Award Winner." Wine Spectator lauded these spots’ depth of wine selections as the wine pairings with the food menu.

Seven restaurants, including Georgia James, March, and Turner’s, received the “Best of Award of Excellence” and 15 spots received “Award of Excellence.”
