H-E-B Snacks That Should Be on Your Grocery List (and What to Skip)

As a born and raised Houstonian, my grocery store of choice has always been H-E-B. The Texas-based chain knows how to create loyalty and a brand identity that embodies what the Lone Star State stands for.
If you’re like me, you usually go in for your list and don’t really care to search around for new things to try, but it’s time to branch out. With summer approaching, you’ll want to have snacks handy for your pool and beach days. Here’s what we tried from H-E-B to see what is and isn’t worth your money.
Sushiya Spicy Tuna Onigiri
1/10
This has been popping up a lot on my TikTok, so it was the first thing I added to my list when I learned I’d be doing this story. I’m already a fan of H-E-B’s sushi. It does the trick when I’m craving some but don’t want to spend too much money. But this onigiri was disappointing. The tuna was almost nonexistent. I was basically just eating a ball of rice. I won’t be purchasing again.

Lone Stars
3/10
This cheddar-baked snack is H-E-B’s take on Pepperidge Farm’s Goldfish. I wish I could say I liked it better, but it lacked a lot of flavor in comparison—the cheddar taste was barely there. The OG name brand comes out on top for this one.

Pretzel Sticks
5/10
I love a good pretzel, in any form. H-E-B’s pretzel sticks taste like every other brand (except Dot’s, which doesn’t compare) and are cheaper, which is a massive plus given the current state of our economy. I will be buying these again.
Reserve Italian Style Snack Tray
6/10
This snack tray comes with Genoa salami, Asiago cheese, and Croccantini crackers. I joked that it’s a mini charcuterie board. I would’ve loved the salami to be sliced thinner, but it paired well with the cheese and crackers. I’ll be adding a glass of red wine to the mix next time I buy this.
That Green Sauce with Bakery tortilla chips
6.5/10 for the sauce; 8/10 for the tortilla chips
I’ve always appreciated how the bakery’s tortilla chips hold up well with any sauce. I prefer buying H-E-B’s tortilla chips over any name brand. And they go well with the grocery store’s That Green Sauce—the label’s warning that the sauce is addictive made me laugh. Maybe because I’m sensitive to spice, I thought the sauce had more of a kick than advertised. Regardless, this snack made me feel like I was eating at a Tex-Mex restaurant (if only I had a margarita to sip on, too).
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus with Sea Salt Pita Chips
7/10 for the hummus; 4/10 for the pita chips
I think I messed up with my choice of pita chip. The sea salt tasted a bit too bland for me, but the hummus made up for it. It’s so flavorful I would eat it with a spoon. I won’t be buying the chips again, but I will be adding the hummus to my grocery list. Next time, I’ll try it with the garlic and herb pita chips instead.

Twisters
8/10
This is the grocery store’s version of my favorite childhood snack, Oreos. As soon as I opened the package, a wave of nostalgia hit me—it smelled exactly like the name brand. Unlike H-E-B’s Lone Stars, this take on the classic cookie sandwich was amazing. If I was blindfolded, I don’t think I could differentiate the two. I recommend adding this to your cart to save a dollar.

Two-Bite Brownies
9.5/10
These come straight from the bakery, so I was excited to try them. I grew up eating H-E-B cakes at countless birthdays, and knowing the snack is made with real chocolate made it more tempting. I honestly expected the brownies to be on the crispy side since they’re prepackaged, but boy, was I wrong. My package included four bite-size brownies that were soft and creamy. This will easily become my new go-to snack when I’m craving a sweet treat.
Banana Bread Milk Chocolate–Covered Pecans
10/10
Blame it on my Southern roots, but if there’s one thing about me, it’s that banana nut bread is my weakness. Naturally, I had to try this chocolate-covered pecan snack that supposedly tastes like banana bread. It’s safe to say that I’ve found my new obsession. The banana flavor in the milk chocolate came through nicely, though I couldn’t taste the pecan as much.
