In Photos: Houston Protestors Turn Out Against President Trump's Travel Ban
Thousands of Houstonians gathered at Bush Intercontinental Airport and Discovery Green over the weekend to make their voices heard.
Hours after President Donald Trump signed into effect an executive order barring entry to the U.S. for citizens of seven Middle Eastern nations—Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen—protestors across the nation began showing up at airports in support of the thousands of travelers who suddenly found themselves detained without notice.
Many, like the Iranian engineer who works here in Houston for Chevron and was on his way home from visiting his mother post-heart surgery, were permanent residents and green card-holders who found themselves unable to reenter the country.
In addition to peaceful protests on Saturday and Sunday at Bush Intercontinental Airport, hundreds more Houstonians came out to Discovery Green on Sunday for the second large public protest downtown in the span of eight days. On Twitter yesterday, Mayor Sylvester Turner lent his voice to those gathered in protest, writing:
Houston has been and will be a welcoming City. Our diversity is an asset and our strength. And as your Mayor, I represent every Houstonian. This is my EO: in this City we shall love, respect and appreciate everyone regardless of their differences and we shall do it peacefully. In this City, we don't build walls; we build relationships. We don't separate families; we value them. We don't hate; we love.
