Perfect Party

June's Perfect Party: Summer-in-the-City Edition

Hurricanes are definitely not invited.

Summertime in Houston has officially arrived, and with it, our dreaded hurricane season. To calm our nerves, we thought we’d invite KHOU Channel 11’s Chief Meteorologist, David Paul, to attend this month’s get-together and explain why forecasters are predicting a moderate season thanks to El Niño. And then let’s get our minds off things, shall we? Here’s something neat: Local environmental attorney Jim Blackburn has teamed up with local artist Isabelle Scurry Chapman on a new book, Hill Country Birds and Waters: Art and Poems, featuring his poems and her artwork, and the two will appear at Brazos Bookstore on June 29. Elsewhere Broad City’s Ilana Glazer has hit the road following the beloved show’s fifth and final season and comes through White Oak Music Hall on June 12, and local chef Jason Howard should be set to open his five-in-one concept, Five Central—think cocktail, wine, and cigar bars, as well as both casual and fancy restaurants—in River Oaks, if he hasn’t already.

Those of us still hung up on the whole hurricane thing could follow Rice junior Kaela Wilbur’s example and spend our summer exploring the Arctic Circle, alone. Of course, unlike Wilbur, whose trip will be funded by her Goliard Scholarship (congrats!), we’d have to pay our own way. Another summer in Houston, it is.
