While Houston-area high school seniors won’t get to partake in the traditional milestone of tossing their tasseled caps into the air (Houston Independent School District announced the cancellation of in-person graduation ceremonies last month), they will get to end their academic career in style.
The City of Houston and Houston First Corporation have teamed up to host an in-person celebration on the evening of June 5. And a star-studded line of celebrities will serve as the Class of 2020’s pseudo-graduation speakers.
According to the announcement from the Mayor Sylvester Turner’s office, each school district will host its own outdoor event during which time a special video tribute featuring words of wisdom from a veritable who’s who of Houston greatness. Famous guests include rappers Slim Thug and 50 Cent, Houston Rockets PG James Harden, Grey's Anatomy actress Chandra Wilson, celebrity chef Christine Ha, Texans’ defensive end J.J. Watt, fashion designer Chloe Dao, and Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles.
While the event—the press release notes is not an official commencement—is for seniors only, those at home can watch the tribute on Houston Municipal Channel (HTV) and stream it through multiple platforms.
