Every year, Houston’s unanimous hometown hero, Trae Tha Truth, is giving back to the city that made him with Trae Day Weekend, July 21-24.
In 2008, Mayor Bill White and the city of Houston declared July 22 Trae Tha Truth Day in honor of the rapper’s philanthropic work, including his life-saving relief efforts during several disastrous hurricanes, along with regular food and gift drives during the holiday season. And in true Trae Tha Truth fashion, he transformed a day designated to honor him into a fun-filled day for the entire city.
The 2021 Trae Day celebration was extended to a weekend and this year, Trae Day is getting even bigger and better events.
Officially announced last week via Instagram, Trae Tha Truth will kick off his commemorative weekend by throwing the first pitch at the Astros game on Thursday, July 21.
This year’s celebration will include events of tradition, such as his annual celebrity kickball game, the Funny By Nature Comedy Show at the House of Blues and a school supply drive. Mixed into this year’s itinerary is a mix of giveaways — he’s partnered with Kroger for a gas card giveaway, providing ice cream and cold water to the homeless and free gas. Perhaps the most significant of giveaways will happen at the Trae Family Funday on July 23, where two families will ride home from Aveva Stadium in new cars.
The weekend will also include celebrity appearances by Jesse Jackson, the original Ninja Turtles and Full House actress Jodie Sweetin.
Most events throughout the weekend will be free and open to the public, but Sunday’s big event, the Funny By Nature’s Comedy Show, has tickets starting at $25. Proceeds from the show will go toward Angel By Nature, the rapper’s nonprofit organization.
