With the new year come new possibilities, and the Bayou City is full of them. As the calendar flips to 2024, Houstonians can look forward to a bunch of exciting changes coming to the city’s parks. With a focus on community engagement, sustainability, and accessibility, these developments promise to elevate the quality of life for all residents.
Arco del Tiempo
A remarkable and innovative creation is set to grace Guadalupe Plaza Park in the East End’s Second Ward in late 2024. Arco del Tiempo, which translates to “arch of time,” is a permanent public artwork that will serve a dual purpose. It will stand as a timepiece, measuring the passage of time in a visually stunning manner, while also providing a shaded, multiuse outdoor space.

Dome-shaped Arco del Tiempo will generate clean, solar-powered energy for the city of Houston.

Standing at an impressive 100 feet in height and spanning 164 feet in width, Arco del Tiempo will be adorned with outward-facing solar panels, harnessing the sun’s energy throughout the day. Its inner structure will be equipped with materials that direct sunlight at different angles as the day progresses. This architectural marvel is projected to generate approximately 400,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This clean energy will be channeled into the city’s power grid before being distributed among residents.

Hermann Park’s renovations also aim to provide a sanctuary for health care workers from nearby Texas Medical Center.
Hermann Park Commons
Early in the year, Hermann Park will unveil a transformation that focuses on revitalizing a 26-acre corner of the green space, known as the Commons, adjacent to Memorial Hermann Hospital. One of the standout features of this project is the creation of exciting areas for children. Among these attractions are a towering 45-foot rocket ship slide, play sections called the Snake Den and Toad Hollow, a carousel, and more. These spaces have been designed to be wheelchair accessible, and they incorporate sensory experiences to accommodate those with neurological disabilities.
The Commons will also feature an array of amenities to enhance the park experience. A welcoming entrance garden will set the tone. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the new deck located by McGovern Lake (those under 12 and over 65 can fish here). A walk-up café will offer a convenient spot to purchase snacks and beverages, and there’ll even be a beer garden.
Located close to the Texas Medical Center, the development aims to provide a sanctuary for health care workers seeking respite from their demanding schedules. Plus, to make access even more convenient for visitors, the conservancy is collaborating with Winpark to allow park-goers to reserve spots in the Memorial Hermann parking garage on weekends for a $10 fee.

Looking Ahead
The Houston Parks Board is currently securing funding to connect Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park, two of the city’s most beloved green spaces. Design work is expected to start in the early half of 2024. This extension of the Houston Parks Board’s Bayou Greenways initiative, a project to create an extensive network of linear parks and trails along nine major bayous, has been in the works for several years. The goal is to provide safer access west of Buffalo Bayou Park while minimizing the impact of commercial development along Memorial Drive.
This connection will provide safer and more scenic access to these iconic parks while preserving the natural beauty of the bayou. According to Beth White, CEO of the Houston Parks Board, the two parks were chosen because they serve almost everyone in the city and are avenues for residents’ daily work commute. While still in its early days, the connection is slated to be completed in the next couple of years.
