Houstonia's 1st Annual Taco Loco
On June 6, 2017 Houstonia Magazine hosted the Ultimate Taco Tuesday for its first annual Taco Loco, presented by Uptown Park. Houstonia dining editor Alice Levitt and marketing & events manager Laura Tracy handpicked 13 restaurants and seven bars to serve up tacos and margaritas, respectively, to offer the crowd of more than 500 guests a pairing of unbeatable scale and quality. And attendees weren't the only beneficiaries: The sell-out event drummed up $1300 for Pink Door Non-Profit and donated 250 pounds of leftover food to Second Servings of Houston, a charity that delivers meals from events and restaurants to the hungry.
Tacos and margaritas were judged blind by a panel of local luminaries as well as attendees. The judges declared the simple but admirably executed smoked brisket and guacamole taco from Fusion Taco tops, along with the margarita from Cyclone Anaya's Mexican kitchen, made rich and sweet with coconut. The people's choice for best taco belonged to Broken Barrel, which tucked its cumin-scented pork into pineapple-flavored tortillas. Ambrizia Social Mexican Kitchen's fruity margarita was guests' favorite. Sammy's Wild Game Grill took home a special prize for most creative ingredient for their al pastor taco made with wild boar and topped with fried jalapeños.
Will Houstonia repeat the feat next year? That's a hearty "Si!"
