Where to Wear: The Cowboy Hat

To the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, obviously!

Let’s face it, the only thing keeping you from going crazy after the winter holidays is knowing that the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is just around the corner. Like a true Houstonian, surely you’ve got your favorite cowgirl hat ready to go, but if you don't (or if you're ready to add to your Texas hatwear collection) we love Shady Brady’s feminine take on the classic raffia straw hat, complete with a sueded, studded hat band and braided chin strap.

What better way to kickoff your rodeo weekend than with date night! Show a cowboy your softer side with a sweet dress—belted to show off those curves—some arm candy and your straw hat. And of course no cowgirl is complete without her wild west boots! With a clutch for the essentials (read: lipstick and smartphone), you’ll be swaying alongside your man to the sexy sounds of John Legend.

Clockwise from top left: NARS audacious lipstick in Anita, $32 at Sephora; Velvet by Graham and Spencer ‘Sayuri’ tunic, $126 at Anthropologie; Shady Brady three diamond hat band, $95 at Pinto Ranch; Rodebjer ‘Rode B’ perforated belt, $217 at Laboratoria; Liberty Boot Co. ladies Santa Fe boots in turquoise, $469 at Pinto Ranch; CAB ‘Ryder’ mini wallet clutch, $78 at Leap; Free People best of the best hard bangles in peach, $28 at Free People.

You love the carnival as much as your nephew, but you’ll be strutting that midway in style. Show off your assets in dark skinnies, a soft blouse and some boots made for walking. Complete the look with western-ware inspired accessories and your cowgirl hat, ready to conquer the sweetest funnel cake and the most stomach-churning thrill ride—though not necessarily in that order.

Clockwise from top left: Shady Brady three diamond hat band, $95 at Pinto Ranch; H&M short-sleeved blouse in teal, $25 at H&M; Sheer paisley print scarf in cream/blue, $10 at Forever 21; Felicia fringe satchel, $54 at Francesca’s; Large raffia cuff bracelet in weathered coral, $45 at J. Crew; Lucchese ‘Carey’ bootie in sable python, $995 at Lucchese; ‘Alley straight’ jeans in raw wash, $115 at Madewell.

Clearly it wouldn’t be a rodeo weekend without hitting the Western shopping mall and indulging in some deep-fried deliciousness. Dressing for comfort is key, so think flowing pants in a flirty print, paired with a soft denim shirt and some sassy boots—add your straw hat and a bit of bling for good measure. Grab your girlfriends and take your laid-back look straight to the deep-fried red velvet cake stand. They’ll thank you later, and you’ll be thanking that forgiving waistband.
