Applied topically, the rough, fragrant blend smooths and tightens skin, targets cellulite and provides skin-soothing antioxidants. And for those dreading swimsuit season, good news: the buzzy product minimizes the appearance of dimples, stretch marks and other imperfections.
Sounds miraculous, right? Well, it’s not the answer to all your prayers, but it does bestow a touch of magic, according to board certified dermatologist Dr. Samantha Robare-Stout of the Dermatological Association of Texas in Houston.
Robare-Stout says scrubs are a useful addition to skin care regimens, but cautions those from viewing it as a cure-all Fountain of Youth.
“Scrubs made with coffee grounds are not a replacement for medical-grade skin treatments, but they can serve as safe, resourceful and cost-effective options for incorporating gentle exfoliation and DNA-protective antioxidants into any skin care regimen. Any form of massage, including the motion used to apply a coffee scrub, will cause mild swelling, which will reduce the appearance of cellulite, but the effects are temporary,” she says. “All-in-all, coffee scrubs are great for exfoliation, but they are not going to be the miracle solution for visible veins and cellulite.”
