The cultural center of Houston continues to move ever-so-slightly eastward. Case in point: Catacomb HTX, a hybrid art gallery and shop opened in June just down the street from Tout Suite in the Commerce Street Art Studios, the same building that houses local brands FYHA and FP Co. Limited.

Catacomb is the brainchild of Ashley Cid, who is behind the web-based vintage shop Milk + Honey, and graphic designer Blake Jones. Both Cid's vintage clothing and accessories and Jones' art prints are available in the shop, which focuses on unconventional and fun works from local makers who don't have an established retail prescence.

There are prayer candles featuring the likenesses of late Houston rappers by Christopher Henry, the genre-bending adornments of M!ecstatic Jewelry, quirky brooches by Nashville's Sack of Cats, comic books from Black Mask Comics, Wyatt Little's ceramic planters in the shape of sneakers, tees, jewelry, temporary tattoos and stickers, plus art prints and other graphic works on the shelves and the walls, most of them created with tongue firmly placed in cheek. For a smallish space, Catacomb offers plenty of interesting and unexpected goods to peruse, with room for the still-new shop to grow with new partners and vendors.
