Want to live edgier, bolder, freer in 2016? The lone statement earring is something to think about as you plan party outfits. Dainty jewelry is popular amongst bloggers and Instagrammers, but statement earrings stole the spotlight at the Spring/Summer 2016 runway shows.
Christian Dior designer Raf Simons started the trend when he sent models down the runway with one earring during the fashion brand's Fall 2013 show, followed by Louis Vuitton models sporting a statement dangler in Fall 2014 shows. During the most recent Spring/Summer 2016 fashion shows last September, models were seen wearing one edgy, ball-and-chain earring at Emilio Pucci while those at Creatures of Comfort sported lone metallic danglers.
Lifestyle blogger Nikki Kestenbaum of Lipstick and Brunch says this look doesn't have to come across as edgy—it can be used for high glamour, too.
“I'm especially fond of ear cuffs since last year and I still see them trending on the red carpets. I usually enjoy curling my hair to the side and letting one ear cuff take the spotlight,” she says.
While stacking delicate rings and tiny studs are ideal for the day and office, bold sculptural earrings can instantly add drama and flair to your classic LBDs when hitting the town. Go one step further and only wear one statement earring and dance the night away with confidence.
“The most important thing to remember with a trend like the solo earring is to be confident and own it,” says fashion blogger Chiara Casiraghi, co-creative director for Zayver Designs. “If you’re trying it out for the first time, do so with a fabulous ear cuff. I love the solo dangle earring look, but I think it’s better balanced with a small matching stud on the other ear.”
Be prepared for the “I think you lost an earring” comment from the less adventurous, says Heather Petrey of LAfashionsnob. Petrey was inspired to try this trend while browsing through a box of vintage jewelry at Round Top’s antique shows. She found several singles and thought they were “just too cool” to pass up.
“Most of them are the funky, large '80s pieces that are definitely statements in their own right,” she says.
Not confident enough to rock this trend? Bring the matching earring and store it in your chosen handbag for the night. Whether you’re wearing a sparkly shift dress or a feathery blazer, the lone sculptural statement earring is a must this year.
