I Tried It: Twerking Class

If there's anything I love, it's an intense workout. And booty popping.

I thought I could dance. I thought I had some rhythm and could move my body in an appealing way. I once advanced pretty far in a dance contest by shaking what my mama gave me. Then I tried a twerking class and realized I need to bring some more sexiness to my repertoire. The same friend that pushed me to try aerial dance contacted me on a Friday morning with an announcement: "I'm taking a twerking class tonight and I signed you up." How do you say no to that?

We all know what twerking is. We've all unfortunately seen Miley Cyrus at the 2013 MTV VMAs. I can approximate something similar to this provocative booty dance but I don't have the sexy moves down by any means. The Twerkology class at Revolve Pole Studio is supposed to help with that. The class is described as a hip hop cardio class promising an intense work out with booty popping and plenty of shaking. If there's anything I love, it's an intense workout. And booty popping and shaking.

I thought to ask about the dress code beforehand and was told to wear something I can comfortably move around in. An oversize t-shirt and yoga pants fit that bill. I arrived to the studio to find some of the other ladies were in much much sexier gear. I should have worn booty shorts and maybe brought knee pads. So many of these awesome ladies proudly showed up in little shorts, ready to get their twerk on. 

The super adorable pixie Chloe—stage name Bambi—was our instructor for this class, full of cheerful, fun energy that helped us shed a bit of self-consciousness. The dirty rap songs didn't hurt either. Chloe brought the sexy back immediately to our warm up, encouraging us to arch our backs and shake out our hair. The booty shaking isn't as intimidating to me as putting on a sexy act, especially in public, but I went with it, stiffly at first.

Chloe walked us through the basics of twerking, adding simple modifications along the way to give us variety. I can proudly say I am now able to twerk. I can twerk in a handstand. I can twerk in a lunge and a squat. And on all fours. I can booty clap, and I can booty pop. This class was seriously some of the most fun I've had working out but it was more than a workout.

As cliché as it sounds, it was an awesome celebration of being a woman. I left class with elevated spirits and I've been practicing what Chloe taught us in the mirror at home ever since. Maybe one day I'll even debut these moves on a dance floor somewhere.
