Other people may go by the calendar, but it's officially summer in Houston when the Bushes decamp for Maine—around mid-May, usually. We know what it means: the heat starts to set in early, and the humidity takes every opportunity to wrap us up in its sweaty embrace. Keeping up with the trends while tailoring your look according to the brutal climate—you know, instead of opting for shortest shorts and the thinnest T-shirt possible—is a challenge. But we've got ideas—here's five stylish pieces that will let you have your ice cream cake and eat it, too (before it melts).

1. Rompers

Let the men have fun in their rompHIMs and stay comfy and cute in this breathable and light all-in-one outfit—because rompers aren't attached to you at the waistband, like shorts are, they can offer a more relaxed fit. We especially love the casual style of this breathable chambray version with Swiss dots and a scalloped hem for extra cuteness. As a bonus, nothing can compare to a romper when it comes to that blissful moment when you finally escape into the air conditioning of your home at the end of the day and pull the whole thing off in one fell swoop.

2. Linen shorts

Shorts are my go-to when I know I’ll be out and about in the sun, but making the choice to wear this bottom doesn’t have to be so basic. Linen shorts are lightweight,  and the natural fiber is known for it's breathability—plus the refined fabric makes even plain drawstring shorts look more put-together than denim cutoffs.

3. Bright sundresses

A sundress is a no-brainer in the summer. Its sister, the T-shirt dress, got us through the cooler months with its easy cut and chic layering options, but now it’s time to show a little skin and add some color, too. Bright hues and classic prints, like this pretty gingham version by Draper James, are just begging to be worn in the summer, and it’d be a crime not to oblige.

4. Espadrilles

The woven soles and wrap style of espadrilles are as much a summer staple as bad tan lines and constant sweating. Whether your preference is low-key slippers, colorful wedges or this version with on-trend fringe and ankle wraps, these sandals are never out of style.

5. Blotted lips

Bold lips are a must, no matter the season. If matte lips feel too fall and you don’t want the sticky weight of a lipstick or gloss, the blotted trend is for you. Millennial fave Colourpop just debuted a new blotted finish, which hits the sweet spot between matte and sheer. These light-as-a-feather formulations wear like a lip stain, just with more intense color, making them virtually sweatproof.
