There was a time when the Houston summer social calendar was as empty as a bowl of queso five minutes after I walk into the room. I mean, why even try when the Bushes are still in Maine? But the world spins a little faster these days, it seems like, and no one wants to wait until after Labor Day to start stepping out, melting makeup be damned. Whether you want to get your fall shopping started, pick up some new style ideas or support a fashionable cause, it's all happening in late August.

Magpies & Peacocks Catwalks & Classrooms Kick-Off, Aug. 19 at Magpies & Peacocks Warehouse

This afternoon event functions as both an open house, where those interested in sustainable fashion can check out the organization's work to collect, upcycle and sell donated fashions and meet this year's crop of student designers, as well as a kick-off to their third annual Catwalks & Classrooms Sustainable Design Competition Showcase.

Summer Flea, Aug. 19-20 at Silver Street Studios

It's not too late to get back-to-school ready (even if you haven't been in school in, like, decades) with this air-conditioned market featuring a curated mix of collectibles, jewelry, vintage threads, art, designs and more.

Women of Wardrobe and Tootsies Sizzling Summer Soiree, Aug. 23 at Tootsies

The young professionals arm of Dress for Success Houston is among the most active groups of its kind in Houston. The annual summer shopping event is celebrating its 14th year of combining fashion and a fun cocktail party environment. This year's event will feature styles on display from Parker and Schutz footwear, plus a personal appearance by jewelry designer Lisa Freede. Plus, if you follow the one-in-one-out philosophy of closet management, the more you shop, the more you have to donate to this worthy cause.

The Women's Home reNew & reDo 2017 Fashion Show, Aug. 24 at The Ballroom at Bayou Place

The Cottage Shop doesn't get enough love—along with well-known entities like the Guild Shop and Blue Bird Resale, it's a great Montrose destination for pre-owned clothing and accessories. To emphasize that point, for eight years The Women's Home, which runs the store, has featured the best of its donated designer clothing in an annual runway fashion show, modeled and frequented by some of Houston's biggest style setters—last year over 500 Houstonians attended. It's an important fundraiser for an organization that works to help women in crisis in overcoming abuse, homelessness, addiction and other issues.

FGI Fall Trends Panel, Aug. 29 at LAUNCH

Who better to go over the biggest and best trends for fall stretching across fashion, home and beauty than a panel of celebrated local designers and tastemakers? The Houston chapter of Fashion Group International has invited interior designer and fashionista Lucinda Loya, designer Chloe Dao and The Classroom owner Jon Caballero to LAUNCH to opine on what's going to be hot when the temps (finally) cool down.
