"When you're alone and life is making you lonely you can always go ... downtown." That's as true now as it was when Petula Clark sang it in 1965, and starting tonight, there's yet another reason to go downtown in a new monthly DIY pop-up series that lasts through the spring and summer.
DIY Downtown, presented by Pop Shop America and Houston Downtown Management District, is here to teach the neighborhood how to make everything from cocktails to candles to coffee mugs. Since 2012, Pop Shop America has brought DIY events to Houston through its blog, pop-up craft workshops, and classes around the city; now, it's partnering with the Downtown District, which handles programming for Market Square Park and Main Street Square and is expanding its offerings to promote "the downtown lifestyle," a press release said.
The first DIY session is tonight (Wednesday, March 14) from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Local Foods on 420 Main St., where participants will learn about cocktail bitters and infusions.
"DIY Downtown is the best way to spend the evening and explore downtown," said Pop Shop America founder Brittany Bly. "Our DIY workshops are beginner-friendly and totally fun. You'll leave at the end of the night with handmade goodies that you love."
The series, which runs through August 8, rotates each month to showcase event spaces around the district. "It's an exciting time in downtown right now," marketing director Angie Bertinot said, adding the district is eager to show off new and improved properties like Aris Market Square, WeWork, and the Sunset Coffee Building on Buffalo Bayou.
Each class is $35 and runs from 6:30–8:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Participants can sign up online. Future sessions include the following:
