This Weekend in Design: Anniversary Parties, Designer Handbags, and Trendy Piercings

What's popping up in our city this weekend?

And just like that, it's April. While last weekend brought a brief reprise of winter, this one promises brunch, (another) home tour, plenty of shopping, synchronized swimming, and drag queens (yes, you read that right).

Heroes and Handbags Brunch

When: Friday, April 5; 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: River Oaks Country Club, 1600 River Oaks Blvd.
What: A champagne brunch and designer handbag auction round out this annual event to benefit Heroes for Children, a nonprofit that offers financial assistance to Texas families with children battling cancer. Tickets are $250 per person.

Ylang 23 Piercing Party

When: Saturday, April 6; 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday, April 7; noon–7 p.m.
Where: Tootsies, 2601 Westheimer Rd.
What: When it comes to jewelry, Dallas-based Ylang 23 is like the cool girl in school. And what's cooler than a bevy of delicate ear piercings? Nothing. Curate your own with luxury pieces from the 20-plus designers Ylang 23 has brought to Tootsies for its month-long shop-in-shop (through April 20), and get pierced right then and there with Afton Alexandra.

Manready Mercantile 5th Anniversary Party

When: Saturday, April 6; 10 a.m.–7 p.m. and Sunday, April 7; 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
Where: Manready Mercantile, 321 W 19th St.
What: The trendy Heights brick-and-mortar celebrates five years in business with weekend-long specials, including brand appearances, live music, interactive classes like indigo dying and candle making, and drinks all day long.

Heights Home Tour

When: Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7; noon–6 p.m.
Where: Various locations, tickets and shuttles from Heights Fire Station, 107 W 12th St.
What: The popular spring iteration of the Heights Home and Garden Tour returns to showcase some of the historic neighborhood's best, from century-old restored bungalows to an innovative modern build. Tickets are $20 in advance.

April Pools Day Party

When: Saturday, April 6; 2–5 p.m.
Where: Birds Barbershop, 420 E 20th St.
What: The Heights barbershop celebrates its second anniversary with a pool-themed parking lot party: Think an oversized foam pool, drag queen-led synchronized swimming, Zinka face painting, free beer, tacos for purchase, pool-inspired relays, and a live DJ. The first 50 party guests get a Birds swim cap and clear fanny pack, plus the chance to win a full year of free cuts.
