Zumba nixuye

Zumba kicks it into high gear every Wednesday evening.

Whether you’re looking for a fun alternative to your usual workout routine, or need to find a way to get the kids out of the house, Discovery Green has an array of weekly and annual activities on the schedule—many of them free!—throughout July and August. Learn something new or perfect something old, and enjoy a little fresh air while you're at it.

1. Zumba!

If you want to feel the beat and shake your tail feathers like Shakira, all while burning off last night’s indulgent dinner, try this dance-crazy workout. The instructors are brimming with enthusiasm and energy and will be sure to help you have a great time. Don’t forget to grab a buddy so you can work on your abs by laughing the night away.

Wednesdays, 6:20 to 7:30 p.m., Annheuser-Busch Stage, free

2. Hip Hop Dance Workshop

ADC Studios of Houston offers an open workshop every Thursday through July and August, designed for kids and teens ages 8 to 17 so they can pop, lock, and drop that Pokémon Go game for an hour. Parents, you're encouraged to attend and participate too—if your kids will allow it.

Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Annheuser-Busch Stage, free

3. Parkour

Don’t worry, this isn’t The Office’s version of parkour. Parkour was originally developed from military obstacle training, but now it’s used as an exciting and unique fitness adventure as you aim to get from point A to point B in the most convoluted manner possible—techniques include jumping, climbing, crawling, balancing, vaulting, and fluidly moving through any environment. Parkour enthusiast and beginners alike are welcome, but arrive early—the class is limited to 25 people.

Thursday, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Sarofim Picnic Lawn, free

Yoga uikubd

BYO yoga mat; the classes are free!

4. Hatha Yoga

Hatha refers to the practice of physical posture designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones and is known as the yoga of balance. Bring your yoga mat and benefit from a practice of enhanced awareness to work towards a strong and healthy body. Forgot your mat or don't own one yet? You can purchase one from the main Discovery Green office, where you'll also need to fill out an exercise release form before class.

Saturdays, 9 to 10 a.m., Sarofim Picnic Lawn, free

5. Young Writer Workshop

After you’ve had you-time at Hatha Yoga, you can take your kids over to the Young Writer Workshop inside the HPL Express—that's the little library on the Discovery Green campus—to let their busy minds get to work under the guidance of volunteers from Writers in the Schools. Make sure you get there a little early because the workshop is limited to 25 students and it’s first come, first serve.

Saturdays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., HPL Express, free

6. Sundown at The Grove

This weekly series at The Grove pairs a different flight of craft beers with a fresh round of light bites from chef de cuisine Ryan Williams. This Thursday, look for beers from Goose Island; next Thursday, the theme is "Belgians" and the Thursday after, it's beers from local favorite Karbach. Each ticket includes four 4-ounce pours of beer, food pairings, and the gorgeous evening view from the second story of The Grove, overlooking Discovery Green and the downtown skyline.

Wednesdays, 5:30 to 8 p.m., The Grove, $22.75

Discovery Green's Nighttime Flea Market takes place on the third Saturday of every month.

7. Nighttime Flea Market

This monthly event offers a bargain-filled treasure hunt full of artful kitsch, vintage items, mid-century modern furniture, recycled and repurposed items, and collectibles. X marks the spot on the southeast end of the downtown park where you can find the market lit up by twinkling lights. Check out the list of vendors online before you head out so you don't miss any hidden gems.

Saturday, August 20, 6 to 10 p.m., free

8. Learn a Language

Learning a new language at an early age is more effective than learning at a later one, so if you want to skip the boring summer classes, bring your kids here to learn Spanish from a certified Silvia's Languages instructor in a fun and enthusiastic environment. These weekly classes are for toddlers through 10-year-olds, with kids learning basics such as colors, numbers, days of the week, names of the months, how to introduce yourself, shapes, weather, seasons, the alphabet, and animals.

Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., free

Circus arts da714w

There's more to circus arts than clowning around.

9. Circus Arts

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to perform in a circus and get a workout in, you’ll get a taste of that here, where you'll learn about the fitness form that consists of ground arts and acrobatics such as contortion and flexibility, low tight wire, partner acrobatics, juggling and hand balancing taught by Nosa and Susie Edebor (the couple you may know as Houstonia's Best Yogi winners in our new Best of the City issue, who also teach Acro Yoga classes outside of Discovery Green).

Tuesdays, 6 to 8 p.m., Hess Patio Deck, free

10. Core Focused Yoga

This is where we really get the heart pumping. Dynamic flow sequences get the body warm, while long-held poses strengthen and stretch muscles so you can train your body to become stronger and more flexible. Bring out your yoga mat every Tuesday evening to release tension and connect with yourself.

Tuesdays, 6:30 t0 7:30 p.m., Annheuser-Busch Stage, free
