Sunday Streets Heads West to the Energy Corridor
Fall couldn't have hit at a finer time, as Cigna's Sunday Streets event returns from its summer hiatus to hit the suburbs for the first time ever. Since its inception in 2014, the free monthly bike ride/neighborhood open house has closed down major thoroughfares in the Heights, Montrose, the Third Ward, the East End, the Museum District and downtown to encourage more Houstonians to explore their city streets car-free, but it's never left the Loop—until this weekend, when Sunday Streets heads west into the Energy Corridor.
This Sunday, a 1-mile stretch of Eldridge Drive between Briar Forest and Enclave will be closed to all vehicle traffic between noon and 4 p.m. In place of cars, expect a crowd of 20,000 Houstonians venturing up and down the busy street on bikes and by foot. As with past Sunday Streets events, businesses along the corridor will be offering food and drink specials, with plenty of patios to post up at along the way. Those who live in the Energy Corridor are already in the know, but this stretch of Eldridge offers one of the most diverse dining scenes outside of Sharpstown, with everything from Indian and Italian to Vietnamese and Venezuelan.
Another bonus for this Sunday's stretch of street: the route offers easy access to Terry Hershey Park, with trailheads just off Enclave Parkway. In addition to scenic walking paths along tree-shaded Buffalo Bayou, Hershey Park also offers some of the best biking trails in Houston—the so-called Anthills that criss-cross the 500-acre park—making this a destination Sunday Streets event even for those who don't live nearby.
The next Sunday Streets event takes place back inside the Loop in the Fifth Ward on November 13, closing down an L-shaped part of Lyons Avenue, while the December 4 event heads back into the 'burbs, closing down 43rd Street between Ella and Rosslyn in Garden Oaks/Oak Forest.
