Since its successful opening in Houston last summer, True Food Kitchen has won us over with its distinct menu of nutritious yet still downright delicious dishes. Seven days a week, the Phoenix import offers diners a full-service menu of recipes based on Dr. Andrew Weil's anti-inflammatory diet—the gluten-free spaghetti squash casserole made with organic tomato and zucchini is a favorite—with daily specials that include everything from fresh-baked muffins to fresh-pressed juices (we love the bright green kale-ade most of all).
Right now, during peak patio season, True Food Kitchen at swanky BLVD Place is our pick for happy hour of the week—and not just because the new happy hour menu is only being offered here in Houston and in Dallas. It's also thanks to True Food's spacious dining room, juice and refresher bar, expansive covered patio and plethora of under-$5 food and drink specials.
During its weekday happy hour from 3 to 6:30 p.m., guests have plenty of options to choose from on both the cocktail and food menus, including True Food's ever-popular refreshers made with natural, non-alcoholic ingredients (we love the Andy's Elixir with sea buckthorn and honey).
Decadent small plates start at $4 and include bison short rib tacos with tomatillo and jalapeno and butternut squash tarts made with sage, cranberry, pistachio and goat cheese—a fine fall selection to enjoy with a full-bodied Cabernet.
Wines by the glass and local Texas craft beers are $5. Cocktails are also $5 and include an adventurous variety of cucumber margaritas, pineapple mojitos and pomegranate martinis.
And if you do want to indulge in the most fastidious of ways, you can always boost your non-alcoholic refresher with one of True Food's organic and gluten-free spirits for an upcharge of of only $1. Guilty but not—all in one drink. How can you go wrong?
