Lubys wthnpo

This could be you, no cooking necessary.

You know you love Luby's mac 'n' cheese. We know you love Luby's mac 'n' cheese. Ever since we shared the recipe in our February 2015 issue, it's consistently been one of Houstonia's most popular stories on the web. So we're almost afraid to tell you, but you may not need to make that roux yourself anymore.

Starting this Monday, December 5, H-E-B will be enabling your culinary laziness with frozen Luby's mac 'n' cheese that will give you the appearance of pulling a homemade casserole from the oven with only the effort of setting the temperature and remembering not to burn anything.

"We're thrilled that two Texas traditions are joining together to make Luby's famous Mac & Cheese available exclusively at H-E-B stores,” said Scott McClelland, President H-E-B Houston Division in a release. “This iconic dish is beloved by Texans and we are honored to help bring it to dinner tables across the state.”

The beloved cafeteria chain was founded in San Antonio in 1947, meaning this new development is just months shy of its 70th birthday. Its parent company, Luby's Inc., which also owns Fuddrucker's and Cheeseburger in Paradise, is headquartered in Houston.

Roughly 270 H-E-B locations will stock the frozen mac. It will be available both in its classic iteration and with jalapeños and red peppers in 40-ounce packages. Don't need that much? They're actually packed in five servings, so at a price of $6.95 for the entire freezer box, you can either impress your family all at once or have a budget-friendly solo meal. If you're microwaving your dinner-for-one, you'll have to wait seven minutes before that American cheesy goodness is melting in your mouth. Crisping it up in a conventional oven? That will take half an hour. But come Christmas, your family will be impressed with your Luby's-like mac 'n' cheese acumen.
