Whether you’re headed to the Houston Rodeo, a Texans game, or another major event, staying fueled is part of the experience. While dining options around NRG Stadium are relatively limited, a handful of hidden gems and dependable standbys make it easy to grab a satisfying bite before or after the crowds roll in. These are the spots worth knowing when you’re near NRG.
Angelo’z
Sink your teeth into one of Texas’s best handhelds at this laid-back sandwich shop. Tucked into a strip mall, Angelo’z is especially known for its po’boys, including a standout shrimp option served on fresh bread and the Supreme, which comes with double ham, salami, provolone cheese, and its famous chow chow. Other favorites include a whole muffuletta, meatball subs, and Philly cheesesteaks. Make it a combo, and complete your meal with a bag of chips and a cold drink.
Chacho’s
Referenced in Travis Scott’s song "Top Floor" with Gunna, this Tex-Mex restaurant is a 24/7 no-frills-or-thrills spot, ideal for post-drinking munchies. True Chacho’s fans know the party vibes here are fueled by frozen margaritas, plenty of chips with cilantro sauce, and burritos packed to the brim. Heavy emphasis on the favorable late-night hours—diners shouldn’t be expecting award-winning food (nor service), but, in a pinch, it gets the job done.

Clutch City Cluckers
While fried chicken sandwiches aren't the craze they used to be, Clutch City Cluckers specializes in a version that’s worth a little hype. Open late (until 5am weekends and 3am weekdays), the food truck offers its signature Clutch It Like It’s Hot—tenders, slaw mix, sliced pickles, and the truck’s Cluck It Sauce, all slapped onto a challah bun. Switch it up and get it in wrap form, or add the cheesy fries for an indulgent side you can share.
Dimassi’s
For an all-you-can-eat option, head to this halal Mediterranean buffet. For between $19 and $24, score unlimited portions of dishes like falafel and veggie grape leaves, braised lamb shank, zesty fried fish, creamy chicken pasta, and plenty of dips, including hummus and baba ghanoush. End on a sweet note with an apricot jam cookie, rice pudding, or baklava.
El Tiempo Cantina
Also selling its potent margaritas at Daikin Park, El Tiempo Cantina is practically synonymous with sports games. Its location just minutes from NRG Stadium is the ultimate pregame spot for strong drinks and quality Tex-Mex in big portions. Fuel up on sizzling fajitas while sipping on margaritas available on the rocks, frozen, skinny, and in different flavors by the glass or pitcher, with upgrades to premium tequila brands like Herradura, Clase Azul, Patrón, and Don Julio.

JP Tacos El Patron Del Sabor
A short walk from the NRG Center, JP Tacos is a go-to for pre- or post-event bites, serving crispy tripe, carnitas, and trompo (marinated pork) with pineapple on fresh corn or flour tortillas—all for under $4 each. The $20 JP Special is a steal, pairing three beef tacos with sides, housemade salsas, and a soft drink or agua fresca. On weekends, regulars flock for the viral taquitos de canasta, moistened under onions and steamed in a basket until tender. All that comes with an atmosphere that encourages fun—and a little gambling. Be the first customer of the day to roll a six with the die and win a free meal.

Jollibee
Deviate from your typical fast food at this wildly popular Filipino chain, lauded for its crispy fried chicken, juicy burgers, and cult-favorite Jolly Spaghetti, covered in the chain's sweet-style sauce with ground beef, chopped hot dog, and cheese.
Luby’s
Though founded in San Antonio, this cafeteria has captured Houstonians hearts (and stomachs) with comforting plates, ample seating, and “something for everyone, every day.” Whether it's blackened tilapia, Angus chopped steak, meatloaf, or enchiladas, diners can fulfill most any craving here. For the best value, go with the LuAnn platter ($9.49), which includes an entrée, two sides, and a roll.

Pappas Restaurants
A guide to NRG dining wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the Houston-based Pappas Restaurants, which has not one but three restaurants in the area. Channel your inner Texan at Pappas BBQ with po’boys, smoked meats, rib platters, and loaded baked potatoes, or try out the steak fajitas, enchiladas, margaritas, and other Tex-Mex favs at Pappasito's Cantina. If you have a few extra dollars to spend and are feeling a little fancy, Pappadeux invites you to indulge in Gulf Coast cuisine and seafood aplenty: fried shrimp, calamari, octopus, gumbo, and Cajun specialties like crawfish platters and shrimp étouffée.
Taquerías Arandas
If you’re stumbling out of NRG on a weekend and in need of a hangover-friendly meal, treat yourself to a bowl of menudo and Taqueria Arandas. This nutrient-rich, broth-based soup is the replenishment your body needs after a day in the stands. Any day of the week, there's reliable Mexican food: Go all out with one of the several fajita plates, or try what the restaurant labels “Mexican fast food,” in the form of tortas, taquitos, meaty gorditas, and quesadillas with La Vaquita cheese (the best cheese ever).
Timmy Chan’s
Rap fans in the area should make Timmy Chan's a part of their H-Town itinerary. This area chain is perhaps most famous for its ties to the hip-hop scene, hosting celebrities like Bun B, DJ Dirty Dave, and Paul Wall, who once name-dropped the restaurant in one of his songs ("Down here we got ghetto grub, like Williams Chicken or Timmy Chan's"). If you're dining in, don't expect anything hoity-toity. Do expect dirt-cheap combos of Chinese American staples like fried chicken wings, egg rolls, and portions of fried rice, piled high. Pair it with a soda or red Kool-Aid, just as us locals do.
