Autumn is here, and as the leaves change color and the days get shorter, Houston goes all out with its unique oddities. For this month’s edition of Only in Houston, we’re looking at the zaniest headlines to come from local news. So far, we’ve had a high-profile breakup of our favorite billboard lawyers, even more Turkey Leg Hut drama, and things you can’t help but chuckle at. Sit back and buckle up. This month might give you whiplash.

They Pusch-ed, We (Didn’t) Ngyuen

Anyone who has spent any time on a Houston highway knows Pusch and Nguyen. Composed of personal injury lawyers Anthony Pusch and Chi-Hung David Nguyen, the law-fighting duo was known for their hilarious billboards (e.g., Avocados at Law) and their iconic “We Pusch, You Nguyen" slogan (pronounced “push” and “win”). In August 2024, the pair made headlines for lawsuits against each other. Pusch alleged that Nguyen received "disproportionately large compensation” from the law firm, which Nguyen denied. In October 2025, the duo officially split, leaving many Houstonians feeling like children of parents in an ugly divorce. Then, weeks after the split, Pusch’s law firm went for a rebrand, enlisting the face of Nguyen’s replacement, Bob Wynne (also pronounced “win”). The newly minted Pusch and Wynne have already hard-launched their partnership on social media and a hilarious billboard that broadcasts their “It’s Complicated” status.

Swangas and Sirens?

Texas Southern University hosted its popular homecoming parade in October, and in true H-town fashion, even the police showed out. Members of the Harris County Constable Precinct 7 pimped out a patrol car. Outfitted with elbows—spoke-style rims that extend outward, the authorities made sure to drive the vehicle throughout the parade in slab fashion—slow, loud, and banging.

The McKnight Before Christmas

Months ahead of Christmas, Houston officials announced plans for its tree lighting celebration, featuring R&B singer Brian McKnight. Immediately, the city faced backlash over its headliner choice, with critics flaming McKnight as an “AWFUL person.” City council member Tiffany D. Thomas even joined in, calling the event a “hard pass.” In recent years, the “Back at One” star has been embroiled in controversy, making a sexually explicit ballad that inspires second-hand embarrassment and negative public comments about his ex-wife, Julie McKnight. Most recently, McKnight drew criticism for disavowing his biological children with his ex, referring to them as ‘products of sin,’ before naming his newborn son after himself—despite already having a Jr. The city has yet to respond to the backlash. However, time will tell whether fans are “Still in Love” with the controversial choice.

Yet Another Turkey Leg Hut Scandal

It’s been nearly a year since the once-famous Turkey Leg Hut shut its doors amid a swirl of controversy. The Almeda restaurant was once symbolic of Black success, but with bankruptcy filings and federal charges, its history has turned into a plot even Tyler Perry couldn’t make up. In April 2025, restaurant frontman Lyndell “Lynn” Price was arrested on federal charges and has been in custody ever since. Among other drug trafficking charges, federal investigations discovered Price was connected to a 2020 arson case where Bar 5015, a competing bar on Almeda Road, exploded after accomplices poured gasoline at its entrances and set fire to the restaurant. On October 30, additional federal charges were levied against Price, including accusations that Price had a 12-gauge shotgun outfitted with a flamethrower while selling marijuana.

Price isn’t the only accused restaurateur in the family. His estranged wife and Turkey Leg Hut co-owner, Nakia Holmes, was recently arrested in Houston with felony charges. Prosecutors accused Holmes of hindering the apprehension of an aggravated kidnapping suspect named Johnathan Saizon. According to court documents, Saizon, who is identified as Holmes’s ex-boyfriend, was arrested after his ex-girlfriend (another woman) claimed he beat her with a tire iron and held her against her will for six hours.

Houston Rapper Promotes Drug-Free Lean Drink

Known for his hit song “Ghetto Gospel,” Houston rapper Sauce Walka has now turned his career toward harm reduction. Born Albert Walker Mondane, the rapper took to social media to promote SkeeTaste, a beverage company boasting itself as a promethazine-free lean substitute. If you know Houston, you know the city is credited with creating “lean.” Also known as purple drank or sizzurp, this recreational drug is composed of cough syrup, soft drinks, and hard candies, and has been linked to several overdose deaths, including Rich Homie Quan, DJ Screw, and Pimp C. Online, fans praised Mondane’s pivot toward a drug-free lifestyle, with many saying that the lean substitute could help curb addiction.
