Shake It Up at Houston's Dance Salad Festival

Audiences will get a taste of different types of dance from around the world in April.

In its quarter-century of existence, Dance Salad Festival has grown into an international affair showcasing choreography from the most innovative companies out there. “It started as—and still is—a unique way of presenting a mixed-repertoire dance program,” says founder and director Nancy Henderek. “From contemporary to classical ballet, audiences get a taste of different types of dance from around the world.”

This year’s event honors the work of revered choreographer Carolyn Carlson, whose eponymous company will perform two works, each making its U.S. premiere: Li (April 14–15) and Black Over Red (My Dialogue with Rothko) (April 13). Reached over the phone, 74-year-old Carlson, who’s based in Paris and unfortunately unable to travel here for the festival, told us she’s excited her creations are coming to the Houston stage. “I’m honored to be a part of the prestigious Dance Salad Festival,” she says, “as my work is mainly performed in Europe and Asia.”

Performances April 13–15 at Wortham Center, Cullen Theater, 501 Texas Ave. $25–58. A Choreographers’ Forum with a screening of Inanna, featuring Carlson’s choreography, will be held April 12 at the Museum of Fine Arts. For a full schedule with featured companies, visit Dates subject to change.
