Who Makes Houston's Best Gumbo? You Be the Judge

Six of Houston's best chefs compete this Saturday for the best gumbo title.

Remember that gumbo smackdown we were set to have back in December? And then it got really cold and rainy and we had to cancel it because eating gumbo in the cold and rain is no fun? Well, it's back on this Saturday, January 11—and we're opening up the Houstonia house at 447 Heights Boulevard to host it.

Starting at noon on Saturday, six of the city's best chefs will be boiling up big batches of their best gumbo outside, while inside we'll be pouring Jack Daniels cocktails and plenty of local craft beer. A $20 ticket gets you access to the whole shebang, which includes unlimited gumbo and booze. Warning: the tickets will sell out, so get yours early.

Competing chefs include:

  • Danton Nix, Danton's
  • Eric Laird, Liberty Kitchen
  • Randy Evans, Haven
  • J.D. Woodward, Goro & Gun
  • Lisa Carnley, Cajun Stop
  • James Cole, Fleming's

It's your job to taste-test all five gumbos, then give us your expert opinion on which is the tastiest. We'll be awarding two prizes Saturday: one for Peoples' Choice and one for Best In Show (as determined by a panel of judges).

In addition, we'll have plenty of flat-screen TVs showing all the NFL playoff games on Saturday through 6 p.m. And you'll want to stick around, because not only will Saturday be a beautfiul winter day with a high of 73 degrees, we'll be announcing the winner of the gumbo competition at 4:30 p.m.

Buy your ticket now and bring a bib; it's gonna get good and messy.
