Each Friday, Gastronaut rounds up the most notable openings and closings of the week.
Yesterday, we gave you the inside scoop on the new management at The El Cantina Superior—a closing of sorts, as a new regime sets up shop—and the Tex-Mex chicken fried steak they plan to bring to the faltering Heights restaurant. Today, we're headed north to The Woodlands, where beloved pizza chain Gino's East has opened its first-ever Texas location at 25657 I-45 North.
The Chicago-based pizza joint is best known for its deep-dish offerings, though in keeping with its new Texas address Gino's East will also be serving signature items such as its BBQ Brisket 'Za with BBQ beef brisket, caramelized onions, and red and yellow peppers and something called Deep-Dish Nachos. God help us all. Naturally, Windy City favorites such as the Chicago Fire Pizza (hot and spicy patty-style sausage, fire-roasted red peppers, and red onions) and the Meaty Legend Pizza (pepperoni, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, and bacon) will be represented as well.
In addition to pizzas and whatever Deep Dish Nachos are, look for craft beer from both Houston and Chicago: Gino's East will be serving Karbach as well as Goose Island, as well as wine and cocktails. And come January 15, a second Houston-area location will open in Willowbrook at 17116 Tomball Pkwy., with three more Texas locations to follow in the coming months.
