Torrential rains one day, patio weather the next: welcome to Houston in the fall. As the city moves on from the excitement of yet another Houston flood, we resume our regularly scheduled happy hour programming, with Straits at CityCentre as this week's happy hour destination. With its sprawling front patio overlooking CityCentre's main plaza and an exotic food and cocktail menu discounted weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. (and all night Thursday!), it is definitely one fiery hot happy hour.

Warm and fluffy garlic roti on happy hour? Yes please.

Whether it's a sinful cocktail or a spicy dish you crave, you'll find a plethora of choices on the happy hour menu priced at $6 or less. Specialty cocktails include the Peachy Lychee Martini, the pomegranate margarita and the lemongrass mojito. Wines by the glass are only $5, as are the red berry sangria and the white pineapple sangria, refreshing pairings with some of the spicy menu items. If you're not so much the fancy-schmancy cocktail type, you can pick your poison in the way of well drinks priced at $5 or domestic beers at $4.

Known for its large menu of exotic, Southeast Asian-inspired dishes, a tasting tour of the happy hour menu is a fantastic way to try several dishes especially—if it's your first go around with Singaporean, Thai or Indian food. All $5 and perfect for sharing over drinks, the happy hour bites include the Straits Asian tacos in chicken tikka or beef, vegetarian curried samosas served with a chili-garlic dipping sauce, Kalua pork sliders, crispy calamari with kaffir lime aioli, Singapore satay sticks in your choice of chicken, beef, pork belly or shrimp, and the cool tuna tartare with wonton chips.

Though the menu items during happy hour are a steal, the patio at Straits is a delightful backdrop for any occasion. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, Straits offers diners an adventurous culinary experience with new, seasonal additions to the regular menu including a stunning black pepper-caramel roasted mahi mahi, just as beautiful as it is delicious, and a glass noodle and edamame salad, a healthy yet hearty entree. The color of the leaves may be changing elsewhere in the country, but in Houston...tis the season to patio.
