Greater Sharpstown has evolved over the years into three distinct corridors: Chinatown, Little India and the area now anchored by the PlazAmericas Mall (formerly Sharpstown Mall). These listings cover the last area, from longtime favorites to new spots tucked inside the mall itself.
You know a meal is going to be good when it begins with what look like homemade jugs of tej, sweet, slightly fizzy Ethiopian honey wine. You’ll need to bring a small army to finish it all, but that’s the best way to enjoy the ample servings of sautéed beef tibs and spicy bowls of doro wat (and seemingly never-ending baskets of fresh injera bread) at this spacious restaurant.
This sit-down restaurant tucked underneath the food court at PlazAmericas Mall offers a vast selection of Honduran favorites, from fluffy baleadas on the all-day breakfast menu to coconut milk–based conch soup and hearty platos típicos, along with strong, inexpensive margaritas. Weekend evenings, the place turns into a dance club and bar.
The sign sums it up: You can get both here, though we prefer the former, whose skinny batons of dough are fried fresh to order, then coated in cinnamon-sugar. Get yours drizzled with a thick glaze of melted milk chocolate, stuffed with sticky dulce de leche, or transformed into a sundae topped with Blue Bell ice cream.
This shoe-shaped (and -sized) dish—which takes its name from huaraches, or sandals—was first served at a food stand in Mexico City in the 1930s. The oblong corn masa cakes at this PlazAmericas favorite come topped with everything from pork al pastor to beef fajitas, plus plenty of toppings: radishes, queso fresco, crema, tomatoes and crispy lettuce.
This spot used to be a James Coney Island, but its days of serving hot dogs are long over. Today, Houston’s answer to the Halal Guys dishes up its namesake fried chicken and spicy chicken-and-rice bowls drizzled with a creamy garlic sauce—both so good, they’re worth fighting traffic for.
Before you head out to stroll the mall, grab a fruit-filled popsicle from this rainbow-hued dessert bar near the entrance to the PlazAmericas food court—if you can choose just one from among the dozens of flavors in the frosty case. Skip the oddly textured rice paleta in favor of strawberry and, of course, mango.
Whatever you order—gordita, pupusa or taco—get it filled with the signature trompo: strips of tangy-sweet achiote-flavored pork with crispy, griddled edges. We like it best inside a cheese-fattened pupusa with a mound of crunchy, tart curtido—pickled cabbage and carrots—on the side.
A neighborhood staple since the area was anchored by the still-new Sharpstown Mall, this friendly taqueria has even retained the same colorful décor over the decades. Generous parrillada platters, crave-worthy, spicy salsas, and a quick-and-easy drive-thru have made the restaurant a dependable favorite in southwest Houston for years.
