How do you plate these things?

Oh you crafty R&D people, you got us again. First it was KFC’s Double Down, then the still-popular Doritos Locos taco at Taco Bell, and now it's Burger King’s Mac n’ Cheetos. Take our money, R&D folks, and take our health because you know we can’t resist mac-and cheese by itself, let alone combined with Cheetos. You had us at “mac n.'”

The new union of mac-and-cheese and Cheetos began today and its siren song was irresistible. We were almost giddy with anticipation as we drove back from the closest BK, Mac n’ Cheetos riding shotgun. Not even stopping to pet the dogs when we got home (they might have asked us to share), we tore into the bag and smiled when we saw the packaging, almost like a mini Chinese takeout container. And then things went downhill.

We should know by now to never trust the pictures. We were expecting the bright Cheeto-yellow that we still don’t mind getting all over our fingers. What we got was well, dull. The Mac n’ Cheetos looked like long hush puppies. Okay, big deal, they don’t look like they do after a food stylist has had his way with them. Strike one, move along. To the taste! Have you ever had fried mac-and-cheese at a fair? Because that’s what this is. It’s not horrible by any means, but we really don’t get where the Cheetos come in to this concoction. The breading has zero flavor and while the stuffing seems to resemble a decent take on mac and cheese, we were left unsatisfied. That’s where Burger King’s Mac n’ Cheetos fails us, the complete lack of Cheetos we were promised. We ate three of the five we received in an order, searching for any Cheetos flavor, before we gave up.

So our hats are off to you, R&D gang. You got us again. Although we are more often disappointed in your creations than not, you have succeeded at your job and got us excited about something. We’re done with you for now….or until the Flamin’ Hot version comes out.
