It's a great time to be a board game geek in Houston. When the urge to game strikes, your options are plenty, from game nights organized through Meetup and Reddit to restaurants like Melange Creperie, which has started hosting their own game nights. The city is even starting to get board game cafes, with Tea + Victory coming soon and Coral Sword celebrating its grand opening today.
Coral Sword, located at 1318 Telephone Road, is a collaboration between former Astro Hunter Pence, Alexis Pence, Ming Chen of the reality series Comic Book Men and David Buehrer of Greenway Coffee, and is striving to be a hub for all game fans, tabletop and digital alike. Right now they're serving up a variety of coffee options and a selection of teas, including Turmeric Chai, Golden Monkey and Jasmine Pearl; they'll have beer and wine options too.
On the food menu are iconic game night options like pepperoni pizza and chicken strips, in addition to other savory and sweet options. For those looking to get in some early morning gaming, they've got Morningstar doughnuts available.

As for the game side of things, that menu is pretty solid as well. It includes a little bit of everything for everyone, from strategy games to party games to games that are more family-friendly. As a 7 Wonders fiend, I was extra happy to see that it's available as an option. They've also got a selection of games for purchase, including your gateway classics like Catan. The plan is to start running regular gaming events, like Friday Night Magic. They've also got a Twitch channel, so look forward to streaming games being an option.
If games aren't quite your speed, they've also got a selection of comic books to read while you work on your drink. They also plan to have a podcasting booth available, and I can't wait to see what new podcasts spin out of that. The space is interesting, with their color bar backdrop standing out among the darker walls of the café. A few hours after opening, it was already filling up nicely, with games already starting to hit the tables, which means it's likely to be very popular on the weekends.
Coral Sword is open 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. every day except Sunday, when its hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
