Food News: Healthy Options Abound at Montrose's Vibrant

Plus, Petite Sweets bows out, and get ready for Oktoberfest.

WELCOME TO MONDAY. Let's start the week by cleaning out the inbox and scouring the Houston food and drink scene; here is your weekly news update.

Today is the first day for Vibrant, a Montrose concept by artist Kelly Barnhart focusing on healthy dishes without gluten, dairy, refined sugar, and GMOs. Vegetables are celebrated, dairy is made with sunflower seeds, and coconut stars in a number of dishes.

For breakfast, Vibrant is featuring house-made teff bread with vanilla-cardamom cashew butter and walnut dukkah; coconut chia pudding with carmelized butter; and a baked egg skillet with chicken sausage, avocado, and a sunflower-seed ricotta.

Lunch includes a watermelon radish and carrot salad; carrot ginger soup with apple and a toasted seed topping; and bone broth soup with coconut cream, shredded chicken, and carrot.

Petite Sweets closed Saturday, according to a report by Eric Sandler of CultureMap.

The end of the Upper Kirby dessert shop is the latest in a string of bad news in the last month for Cherry Pie Hospitality. The company founded by Lee Ellis and Anthony Calleo made headlines in early August because its Star Fish and Pi Pizza were locked out of their Heights properties for a day. Then a report emerged of a lawsuit against Cherry Pie regarding an alleged breach of contract over its planned Lee's Creamery. After that, Cherry Pie sold its neighborhood Southern restaurant State Fare Kitchen and Bar.

A representative for Cherry Pie Hospitality declined to comment to Houstonia on the future of the company.

Whole bunch of Katy news: Eater reported this week that Sul Bing Su, a Korean shaved ice purveyor, has opened at Katy Asian Town. Meanwhile, Eater also reported that Hai Di Lao Hot Pot (Chinese hot pots) and Eight Turn Crepe (Japanese crepes) are coming to the Katy Grand development.

Oktoberfest is just around the corner, and tickets are about to go on sale for the King's family of restaurants' annual celebration. King's Biergarten's bash runs Oct. 5-7, while King's Bierhaus will honor the German tradition Oct. 19-21. At both locations you'll get wursts, ribs, turkey legs, cake, and beer (of course), plus live music, a strongman competition, a photo booth, beer pong, and an adult carnival. Tickets—$10 for a single day, $20 for a weekend, or $30 for both weekends—go on sale at 9 a.m. Thursday at the King's Oktoberfest website. 

There's a new happy hour menu at Armadillo Palace. Get $1 off all beer and wines by the glass, plus small bites like pork and green chile empanadas, fried pork skins, and taquitos dorados from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and from noon-3 p.m. Saturday.

The 2015 grand prize winner of the H-E-B Primo Picks Quest for Texas Best competition, Tèo gelato (originating in Austin) is coming to H-E-B stores across the Houston area this month. Offerings include cookies and cream, coffee cookies and cream, dark chocolate, peanut butter cup, salted caramel, Texican vanilla, and goat cheese and cherry. Also, Téo will be popping up at Fluff Bake Bar from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 9. Sample there, then buy what you like later.

While you head to Hickory Hollow in the Heights for a chicken fried steak before it closes that location in January, don't forget that you can now get a chicken fried hot dog at James Coney Island. Yes, for $3.59, you can chow down on a Nolan Ryan all-beef hot dog breaded and fried, then put into a toasted potato bun and covered with peppered gravy. 

Do you want to make some pizza? Sure, we all do. Coppa Osteria will be hosting pizza-making classes every Thursday in September. Classes max out at 10 guests, who will learn to toss and top some dough (and get a three-course dinner) for $40. To reserve, call 713-522-3535.

Finally, Saturday is International Bacon Day. To celebrate the sizzle, Liberty Kitchen (at all locations) during that day will be giving away T-shirts to guests that order an entrée with bacon jam, LK's sweet and spicy mix of jalapeño, red pepper flakes, brown sugar, butter, and bacon. The shirt says "Body by bacon jam." I suggest taking a size up from your normal shirt size.
