There's Sausage Waiting For You at King's

Throughout August, King's Bierhaus and King's Biergarten are offering you a metric ton of meat.

King's Biergarten and King's Bierhaus ... they ... have the meats.

This is one sausage party I’m actually looking forward to attending.

For the entire month of August, King’s Biergarten in Pearland and King’s Bierhaus in the Heights will be hosting Wurstfest, an all-you-can-eat sausage extravaganza.

The festival caters to a broad range of eaters by offering a diverse assortment of cylindrical meat (and “meat”) products. Über carnivores will enjoy the Mountain Man, a combination of elk, venison, wild boar, bison, and antelope proteins that is peppery, rich, and not the least bit gamey. This meat-eating reporter also was impressed with the käsewurst, a rich beef and pork sausage laced with cheddar and swiss cheese.

Those that occupy the other end of spectrum may be pleasantly surprised with the high quality of King’s vegan sausages. Chipotle sausage, with the eponymous peppers, plus onions, oregano, cumin, and chile de árbol peppers, not only delivered substantial heat but also flavor and consistency that mirrored that of meat, to the extent that I had to double-check I was in fact not eating animal flesh.

It should be noted that while the thoughtful people at King’s definitely want you to pig out (hah!), they also don’t want to encourage wasting food. For that reason, customers are allotted three sausages of their choice at a time and can order all the additional rounds of sausages they want once they sit down. All the sausages are served with bread slices, though if you’re feeling fancy, other carb options (pretzel buns, poppy seed buns, sweet Hawaiian buns) are available for an extra $1.50.

When in doubt, you know, put an egg on it.

And while the sausages by themselves pack sufficient flavor from their respective complementary ingredients, they only improve with accoutrements. Garnish your wurst with pickled onions, drunken or sports peppers, sautéed mushroom and onions, and/or sauerkraut (each $0.75) or go “premium” via the addition of toppings like apple horseradish, Bavarian sweet mustard, curry ketchup, cheddar-bacon-bier sauce, or a fried egg (each $1).

I also highly recommend ordering a side of King’s fragrant, refreshing, not-so-sour sauerkraut (based on the owner’s grandmother’s 100-year-old recipe) to balance the relative fattiness of the sausages.

The full Wurstfest menu comprises more than 15 sausages; the all-you-can-eat option is $9.95 for traditional sausages only and $12.95 for the addition of exotic and vegan sausages.
