Food News: BuffBurger Brings the Bacon ... and Eggs ... With Breakfast Service

Plus, we have an opening date for a long-awaited Irish pub concept.

BuffBurger isn't just putting an egg on it ... it's starting up an entire breakfast service.

IT'S MONDAY. Let’s start the week by cleaning out the inbox and scouring the Houston food and drink scene. Here is your weekly news update.

BuffBurger launched its new breakfast menu today. The sandwich-heavy rundown includes pork belly and hen egg on a challah bun; 44 Farms beef patty with cheddar and hen egg on a challah bun; fried chicken and pepper jelly on a house-made biscuit; and house-smoked salmon with chevre cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers on an everything bun. You can also sub out buns for salad greens, and order Katz's Coffee and mimosas. Breakfast is 7-11 a.m. daily at its two (soon-to-be three at Westheimer in Briarforest) locations.

Jack & Ginger's Irish Pub, one of two Union Venture Group concepts planned for the intersection of Brazos and Bremond streets in Midtown, will open October 25, according to a release. Jack & Ginger's promises "a modern twist on the traditional pub experience" with 82 taps, Irish and American comfort food, and a 3-7 p.m. weekday happy hour ($7 flights, select appetizers for $5). The second Union concept—77 Degrees—is scheduled to open later in 2018.

It's one of the longest-running events in Houston, uniting members of the culinary community through a love of greens, croutons, grated cheese, and salty salad dressing. Thursday is the 34th annual Caesar Salad Competition, hosted by the Food & Beverage Managers of Houston and taking place at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel's Conrad Ballroom. Twenty local chefs will take place in the competition, and judges will reward participants in the categories of best classic, best presentation, and most creative, and there will also be a people's choice award. According to Eater, Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood and Steaks is moving from its current location at 4611 Montrose Boulevard to 1985 Welch Street. The last day at Montrose Boulevard, says the report, will be December 31. 

Meanwhile, Eric Sandler at CultureMap reports that a team of notable New York chefs (Jonathan Waxman, Jimmy Bradley, Joey Campanaro, and Jason Giagrande) is opening a coffee shop called The Roastery at the new H-E-B in Bellaire. No additional information yet on this venture, according to Sandler, except that an employee hinted at an October opening.

You'll want to grab a table this October at Backstreet Cafe, which is celebrating its 35-year anniversary. A staple of the city's culinary scene, it's evolved from Tracy Vaught's dream eatery that attempted to reflect Gulf Coast cuisine to the early career showcase for James Beard-winning chef Hugo Ortega to a labor of love and celebrated local landmark. To celebrate, all October, Backstreet will offer glasses of 2009 vintage Roederer Cristal Brut champagne for $35. Plus, the cafe will price special cocktails at $3.50. And on October 13, Hendrick's Gin will be at the cafe giving out specialty cocktails.

Karbachtoberfest is underway. Karbach Brewing Co. is marking the annual German beer festival with live music, custom mugs available for purchase, and—of course—wiener dog races. This is the festival's second weekend, and headline performances (6 p.m.) include the Dirty River Boys (Thursday, $10), Wild Child (Friday, $10), and Tony! Toni! Tone! (yes, that Tony! Toni! Nobody needs additional reminders to drink coffee, but what the heck: National Coffee Day is Saturday. The Grove is participating by offering half-off French press pots (2.5 cups of coffee for small, 5 cups for large) and serving homemade biscotti.
