IT'S MONDAY. Let’s start the week by cleaning out the inbox and scouring the Houston food and drink scene. Here is your weekly news update.
Ah, Taco Cabana. From the highway, especially on a long drive, that pink sign can really bring some comfort. For 40 years the San Antonio-based fast casual restaurant has fed Houstonians, and it's celebrating that anniversary from 6-9 p.m. Friday at its 11079 Westheimer location. Play games, win some giveaways, and enjoy Amanda Solis's Selena tribute show.
Earlier this year, Ramen Tatsu-Ya hooked up with Truth BBQ for a smoked shoyu tonkotsu ramen. Those lucky enough to indulge experienced fatty Truth brisket, plus ajitama (egg) and menma (fermented bamboo shoots) in a condensed, 70-hour bone broth spiked with a smoked shoyu, or soy sauce. Luckily this is happening again, and obviously, it'll be popular. The special dish rollout will happen 5 p.m. on September 26 at Ramen Tatsu-Ya. Complimentary 8th Wonder beer will be provided, as well. Think of this as a drool-worthy prelude to Truth's impending arrival inside the Loop.
Speaking of ramen and barbecue, JINYA Ramen Bar is showcasing the Goku Midnight Cowboy: pork broth, beef brisket, bean sprouts, green onion, kikurage, egg, and ramen noodles. It's available at all of JINYA's locations through the end of November.
CultureMap reports that The Rustic, a live music hangout with food and drink that has locations in Dallas and San Antonio, will open November 1 at 1836 Polk St. Judging by its menus in those other cities, The Rustic will showcase items like beer-can game hen, Nashville hot chicken, and family style carnitas, tacos, and brisket.
According to Swamplot, Cloud 10 Creamery is opening its third location, plopping it at 3502 S. Shepherd. And it announced on Monday that it's now a cashless store, only accepting Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and debit and credit cards. I guess the days of kids running into the ice cream shop with just enough coins for a scoop of chocolate are over.
Starting today, Walker Street Kitchen, which has long been serving breakfast and brunch inside the Marriott Marquis, is offering dinner and social hour. The dinner menu includes dishes like fried red snapper, Vietnamese-style with baby bok choy and an Asian slaw; prime filet with sweet potato puree; and a beef pot roast with hard roasted roots. Dinner runs 5-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday, while social hour is 4-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Potente, Jim Crain's lavish Italian restaurant a block from Minute Maid Park, is gracing us with a few new cocktails for fall. They include a pear and vanilla bean margarita (tequila, pear cognac, blue agave, lemon, Madagascar vanilla), a melograno mule (vodka, pomegranate syrup, lime, pomegranate seed, Texas rosemary), and a martini affogato (espresso, Kahlua, vodka, cacao essence, and hazelnut praline gelato). Dig the earthy elements thrown into these pots? Head to Potente.
