These are the Chilly Pumpkin Spice Treats You Need Now

When you want that perfect fall taste to accompany the next cold front.

By Joanna O'Leary October 18, 2019

It's October, also known as Pumpkin Spice Awareness Month, at least in my book. And, since we're in Houston and you can never tell when the temperature is going to spike near 90 degrees, often the most enjoyable way to enjoy some sweet squash (or fall flavors that blend really well with said squash) is in frozen form. Here are our five favorite sub-zero pumpkin and fall treats around town:

Pumpkin Ice Cream, Amy's Ice Creams

Austin-based ice cream outlet Amy's has such a loyal following for its seasonal pumpkin ice cream that patrons can sign up to be called or texted when the flavor finally arrives in shops (usually right on October 1). Order a small cup of this sweet cream infused with pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger, and we recommend adding a crush-in like Oreo crumbles or Kit-Kat bits for texture.

Pumpkin Spice Shake, Becks Prime

For a limited time, the burger chain is offering squash shakes made with 10 percent milkfat vanilla ice cream blended with nutmeg, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Such a thick, bold beverage provides the perfect balance for a double-stacked patty creation.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream, Fat Cat Creamery

The folks at Fat Cat love their pumpkin and aren’t afraid of doubling down on the dairy, as evinced in the seasonal featured pumpkin cheesecake ice cream selection laced with peppery graham cookie crumbs. A double scoop in a waffle cone is well and hearty, but the real cat’s meow is a double scoop topped with the Creamery’s signature warm praline sauce.

Haunted Harvest Pumpkin Fro-Yo, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt

Those seeking to satisfy their frozen squash craving without the heavy caloric investment should head to Menchie's for its Haunted Harvest Pumpkin fro-yo, which is scary smooth, terrifyingly tasty, and mostly devoid of frightening fat. Pro tip: Not all locations carry this flavor, so call ahead.

Pumpkin Mochi, Kroger

The supermarket chain is currently selling dozens of pumpkin flavored products, but the most interesting and one of the chilliest we've spotted is the pumpkin spice mochi. But don’t go scouring the frozen aisle to get your fix: This flavor and others can be found in their own special “Mo Mochi” case in the bakery department.
