The Shamrock Shake, left, is coming to Houston, along with the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry.

For Houstonians wondering what all the fuss is about over an ice-cream-based dessert drink called the Shamrock Shake, McDonald's will be giving you a chance to finally decide for yourself whether it has the tastiest St. Patrick's Day-themed treat in fast-food.

That's right: The Shamrock Shake is coming to Houston this year, according to a representative for McDonald's. The company will be rolling out its shakes nationwide starting Feb 19, celebrating the dessert's 50th year. It'll be available through St. Patrick's Day.

The Shamrock Shake is a beverage of vanilla soft-serve blended with mint-flavored syrup, topped with whipped cream and a single cherry. It was created in 1967 at a Connecticut McDonald's but debuted officially in 1970 with a nationwide release. Houston hasn't been very lucky in getting the shake; according to Shamrock Shake fans across the Internet, it shows up randomly some years in the area, while other years ... not at all.

But this year it'll be around, along with another St. Patrick's Day-themed treat, the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. This concoction, to help mark the 50-year anniversary of the shake, is vanilla soft-serve, mint syrup, and Oreo cookie pieces, and will also be launched Feb 19.

Needless to say, things are looking a bit greener this spring.

“The shake’s unique history and wide spread passion for this menu item has qualified the Shamrock Shake as a beloved cultural icon,"  said McDonald’s archivist Mike Bullington. "We feel lucky to have such dedicated Shamrock fanatics, and hope to continue the legacy of this legendary treat for many more years to come.”

Heck yeah, McDonald's archivist. It's Shamrock Shake season.
