Where Irish Cowboy used to be at 2300 Louisiana St. is now Barkley’s, a bar catering to a different demographic—your dog. It was an idea years in the making for founder Allen Siebeneicher, who wasted no time implementing it once he got the chance. The lease was signed on March 1 and buildout began on March 2.

“More and more, so many people like to take their dogs places,” Siebeneicher says. “And there’s not a lot of options. They work all week, and when they want to go out on the weekend, they don’t want to leave their dog at home again.”

Now, they don’t have to. At Barkley’s the service is “dog-centric,” Seibeneicher says. With a play area for both small and big dogs, water stations all around the space (including an adorable fire hydrant look-alike), and a dog menu, the bar ensures that your pup's every need is taken care of.

“We want to do anything we can do for the dogs to have a good time and be comfortable, so the owners can relax and be comfortable,” Seibeneicher says.

The same goes for kids. The open-air play area, accompanying lawn chairs, and games make it a kid-friendly space, too (before 7 p.m.).

The dog mural on the side of the building makes it impossible to miss. Once inside, the entire open-air bar, wrap-around patio and dog park are shaded to protect both you and your pup from the scorching Houston sun. A large TV and stage along with smaller TVs will keep you entertained while your dog plays.

When you get hungry, be sure to try the PB-BJ, a heavenly smoked pork belly and bacon jam burger on a spicy maple aioli brioche bun (it has our paw-print stamp of approval—even the fries are tail-wagglingly good). Items on the menu with a pawprint symbol mean they come with a little something for your pup, like the Gone to the Dogs cocktail. Owner gets a whiskey and rum drink with pineapple juice, lime juice, and coconut syrup, while dog gets peanut butter.

There’s also a special dogs-only menu with items like Cheeseburger in Pawridise and the Pupsicle (a cube of iced beef broth). You can even buy your dog a beer—a Good Boy Dog Beer, a nutritious treat founded by local bar owners Megan and Steve Long.

So, if your day’s been a little ruff, head over to Barkley’s during Yappy Hour, and don’t forget to bring your canine companion.

Barkley’s is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Yappy Hour is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
