When you think of pharmacies, you might think long lines, prescription refills, empty faces, and on-the-go. But for Dr. Kunal Patel, who owns Apteek Pharmacy with his wife, Priti, “being a pharmacist is not about just filling prescriptions.”

Many major corporate pharmacies have become impersonal factories churning out prescriptions, but the Patels’ River Oaks pharmacy brings back the community feeling with their family-owned pharmacy—think, CHEERS, “where everybody knows your name.”

“We take the time to talk to them, understand their needs, their health, and build relationships with them,” Kunal Patel says of his clients.

And there’s also a feeling of luxury, too, at this mom-and-pop drugstore, with a wide variety of luxe and organic skin care products, vitamins, CBD, and over the counter medications, making it an easy place to stop and shop.

As for the pharmaceutical side of their pharmacy, Patel says they are the most accessible member of someone’s healthcare team, and they take that role seriously with the services they offer.

Like many smaller local pharmacies, Apteek offers compounding, which means “combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient,” according to the Food and Drug Administration. This alteration can be simply tweaking the taste, presentation, or form in some cases, or even life-changing in others.

The Patels also offer medication therapy management and medication induced nutrient depletion. Basically, they’ll work with you to help you understand what you’re taking, and they’ll offer vitamins and supplements that will offset the negative side effects of your medication.

Want to pick up all of your medications at once? Apteek will coordinate a patient's multiple ongoing medication refills to all be filled on the same day. This reduces the number of trips to the pharmacy and missed doses. Want help remembering when you should take your medicine? Apteek offers blister packaging, where they take your medication and supplements and package them into separate “pods” labeled by day and even by the time of day. Think modern day pillbox, but all the work done for you.

“When shopping for clothes, cars, food, or doctors, you always seek out the best of the best,” Patel says. “So why do you settle for any less when it comes to your pharmacy?”

Apteek Pharmacy is available fill prescriptions, with curbside and non-contact pickups during the Coronavirus crisis. Temporary hours are 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Mon–Fri, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Sat, and closed Sun. 2900 Weslayan St., Suite B. 832-307-1678.
