This English-style home has evoked comparisons to the sets of Downton Abbey and Pride & Prejudice, and for good reason. The Memorial area home can rightly be called a manor, thanks to its sprawling 26,000-square-foot floor plan, an exterior covered in stone and climbing vines, and interior features like gilded coffered ceilings and silk wall coverings. And then there are the 2.8 acres of manicured gardens modeled after those found at the palace of Versailles. The home has now sold for a reported $21 million, making it the most expensive single-family home sale in Houston history, and the first over $20 million, say the agents.
The property, built in 2003, is the impetus of Stephen Way, founder, and CEO of Houston International Insurance Group, inspired by the grand estates of Europe and England. Located on a total of 4.2 acres in the Bayou Woods neighborhood, and since dubbed the Manor on Carnarvon, the home has six bedrooms, 11.5 baths, and five fireplaces, as well as all sorts of extras, including a second kitchen for catering, home theater, and wine vault.
Inside are coffered ceilings with faux gold leaf, walnut and marble floors, ornate woodwork, and walls covered in silk upholstery from Fortuny. The primary suite is actually spread across two floors – maybe it’s more aptly called a primary wing? – as it comprises multiple rooms. These include two studies, a fitness center, separate massage and tanning rooms, two en-suite bathrooms, and two walk-in closets. The outbuildings are equally expansive, with not one but two three-car garages, a 3,700-square-foot guest house with all the usual living spaces, and a game room.
Outside, find the gardens – done explicitly in a formal parterre style, with manicured hedgerows, cobblestone paths, and a fountain at the center. If not for the nearby pool, outdoor cabana, and kitchen, we’d think we spied the same setting in Bridgerton, to add another reference onto the pile.
