Red and Rowdy

Celebrate Out of the Box: #ClutchCity Watch Parties

In #Pursuit of a good watch party? Whether you choose to venture out to a bar or host a party at home, celebrate with game day deliciousness as the Houston Rockets take on the Golden State Warriors.

It's all about the hashtags (and the cupcakes).

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you've surely noticed the city of Houston has officially transformed into Red Nation. That's all thanks to our Houston Rockets, who have made it to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in almost 20 years. As such, Houstonians are ecstatic at the thought of our guys taking home the NBA championship. Since their astonishing comeback against the Los Angeles Clippers in last week's 2015 Western Conference semifinals, the Rockets have fans feeling all kinds of nostalgic and hoping to relive what we felt in 1994 and 1995 the last time we held the championship title.

No surprise then that all recent interest has turned to where to watch Rockets games, where to shop for Rockets gear, where to celebrate a Rockets win, et cetera. On social media platforms like Twitter, fans are sharing their excitement with trending hashtags like #Pursuit, #FearTheBeard and the ever popular #ClutchCity. Lucky for you...we, here at Houstonia, are die-hard Rockets fans and have begun to talk (and type) in hashtags in hopes of getting everyone as "red rowdy" as possible while we take on the Golden State Warriors.

Go Out

Doc's Bar & Grill
1303 Westheimer Rd.

Relatively new to the neighborhood, this ATX-based watering hole opened its first Houston location in 2014. With its open-air space on the Westheimer curve, ample bar seating, eclectic food menu and countless flatscreen TVs, Doc's quickly became the hippest sports bar to open in Montrose since Revelry on Richmond. In close proximity to Royal Oak, Anvil and fellow newcomer Stone's Throw, Doc's has fit into the new Montrose landscape nicely and become a staple for Houston game day watch parties.

While Doc's is pretty popular on a regular day, you can imagine the hype on a day when the Rockets are playing—so get there extra early, otherwise you'll see not an empty seat in the house. An hour before tip-off, excited fans settle in and enjoy specials like $3 Texas beers and $5 baskets of wings. Doc's does however, manage to go above and beyond the typical bar menu with some spicy Tex-mex options. My favorite is the chicken-fried avocado topped with creamy tomatillo sauce, but it's also hard to turn down the all-day breakfast that Doc's also serves. For serious fans who enjoy serious food, you will definitely find the energy and pride of #RedNation at a Doc's watch party.

As adorable as basketball gets.

Stay In

801 Town & Country Blvd., Ste. A120

For some of us, it is easier to handle the stress and anxiety of a Rockets playoff game surrounded by friends in the controlled environment of our own home. Stock the fridge with your beer of choice (Rocket Fuel, anyone?) and order in your favorite pizza. Decorate your home in Rockets colors with red cups, plates, and napkins, wear a jersey—heck, wear a fake Harden beard—and invite your guests to cheer on the team in comfort.

Whether you're playing host or attending as a guest (and no matter how manly you are) nothing brightens up a watch party more than Rockets-themed cupcakes! SWEET at CityCentre is offering basketball-themed macarons and the bakery's traditional cupcakes with Rockets flag toppers while the Rockets are in the playoffs. The Red Velvet is an ideal choice; pair it with a #JamesHarden flag and you've got a cupcake worth fighting over. The desserts at SWEET are so visually stunning, they enhance the look of any watch party and are a fun way to celebrate when the Rockets do indeed pull out the #win.

The Rockets may be down one against Golden State, but if we have learned one thing this last week, it is to never underestimate the heart of a #champion. The #WesternConferenceFinals have just begun, so wherever your next #watchparty is, make sure to cheer harder, clap louder, and celebrate our Rockets like the champions we know they are!
