Early voting is underway in Harris County.

Early voting has begun for the March primaries, and registered voters are able to cast their ballot at locations within Harris County. The Harris County Elections Administration Office, headed by Isabel Longoria, anticipates a smooth voting process with the addition of new touchscreen ballot machines and implementing new training for election workers and staff.

“We had more than 2.5 million people who registered to vote by the January 31 deadline. It’s our hope that since so many people are now registered that many of those same people did so with the intent of showing up for the March 1 primary,” says Lynn Munford, the county elections office spokesperson.

Voter participation in Texas primaries have a history of being substantially low. In 2018, of the 15.2 million registered, only 17 percent cast their vote during the midterm primary, according to an analysis by the Texas Tribune. As of Monday, an estimated 9,000 people voted in person for the 2022 primary.

Still, Munford says around 11 percent more people are registered for this election cycle than in previous primary races, for that reason 90 early voting sites will be available this year, which is 44 more locations than the 46 offered in 2018.

Those additional polling locations are sure to come in handy because this is a busy midterm primary election. One of the highlights is the fight for the Democratic candidacy for Harris County Judge. The ballot includes popular Judge Lina Hidalgo facing off against five Democratic candidates. For the Republican ticket, nine candidates are vying to be on the GOP ticket for the county judge's seat, including criminal justice attorney Randy Kubosh and George Harry Zoes.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is running as an incumbent. She doesn't face any challenges for the primary. However, Republican frontrunner Carmen Maria Montiel or Libertarian candidate Phil Kurtz could take Jackson's place in November for Texas' 18th District congressional seat.

While the mayor's race won't occur until next year, several names are at the forefront. Former Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins and Senator John Whitmire announced their bids to run for mayor in 2023. Sylvester Turner will step down next year after serving two consecutive four-year terms.

Early voting will take place throughout the month, through February 19, and picking up again on the 22, 23, and 25, with all locations open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On February 20, polls will be open from noon to 7:00 p.m., and February 24 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
