Mad for Marsala
Every year the creative minds at Pantone select one lucky hue from our color wheel and designate that shade the it color of the year. This fateful choice inspires an array of industries and trades including beauty brands, fashion houses and interior design firms. As a respected creative authority, Pantone forecasts our annual color inspirations.
Over the past six years, we've seen Pantone elect an eclectic grouping. Last year was the eye-catching Radiant Orchid. The years proceeding featured Emerald, Tangerine Tango, Honeysuckle, Turquoise and Mimosa. This year, consumers were in awe when the company selected a bold burgundy called Marsala—a shade much prettier than its name suggests. Not to be mistaken for your favorite Italian cooking wine, Marsala is a seductive amber earth tone that will carry you through all four seasons.

One of our favorite beauty collaborations to ever hit the marketplace is Sephora + Pantone Universe. This makeup powerhouse creates a well-rounded, bright collection of blushes, eye makeup, blushes and lipsticks that highlight the full spectrum of Marsala's brilliance. OPI's Malaga Wine ($9.50) has been one of my staple nail polishes for years. The glossy, somber shade looks vibrant red in the bottle but resembles an autumnal burgundy upon application. What's more, the color transitions well from ensemble to ensemble and day to night.

We'd look for any and every excuse to purchase one of Urban Decay's Naked palettes, but the most recent release, Naked 3 ($54), features an array of Marsala-esque shades. $54 is a splurge for eyeshadow, but this well-reviewed collection is one of the beauty world’s bestsellers.

NARS' Orgasm blush has become something of a legend in the makeup world. This long-standing shade is noteworthy if only for its name, but this year's color of the year may inspire a new NARS favorite. NARS' Seduction ($30) is a much darker sangria blush but inspires healthy, even glow that suits all skin tones.

It's difficult to pull off a dark lip this close to spring. The subtlety of Buxom’s Runaway ($21) allows us to rock Marsala any time of year. Buxom's light chestnut gloss also carries a plumping effect that would make even Scar-Jo jealous.

Sometimes we have neither the time nor the patience to paint on a full face. That's where bronzers like Benefit Cosmetics’ Dallas ($28) come into use. Though we're not in love with the name (obviously), we are sold on this brilliant beauty box. Apply a wisp of this bronzer everywhere from the apples of your cheeks to the tip of your chin to capture a radiant, Marsala glow.
