The first Monkees in Texas has opened at 5885 San Felipe.

If you needed another reason to head to Tanglewood Court—that's the buzzy new shopping center with the mind-blowing, just-opened H-E-B—well, we've got one. The first Texas location of the boutique store Monkees opened in the center on Saturday.

Owners Katie Scroggins and Katie Corts met at a gala, and quickly bonded over their growing families (both were pregnant when they decided to go into business together) and their love of shopping.

"I had literally just met her and she said something like, 'There's nothing like a Monkees in Houston,' said Scroggins, who (like Corts) was familiar with the boutique concept after living in North Carolina. "I thought it would be really fun, and I thought we could do it and do it well."

The result in an unabashedly girly store outfitted with chandeliers and the occasional piece of pink furniture. Unlike a traditional chain store, Monkees features clothing, jewelry, shoes, and accessories hand-picked by "the Katies" including edgy party dresses by Hunter Bell, colorful separates by Annie Griffin, shoes from former Houstonian Dee Keller, GiGi New York handbags, and jewelry by Sheila Fajl, Julie Vos and Kenneth Jay Lane. Scroggins notes that they stock everything from a $30 t-shirt or bracelet to a $500 cocktail dress or a vintage Chanel bag.

"To me a Monkees is a sweet, Southern girl with a little bit of sass," Scroggins says. "We're both moms and we want to be sexy but not showy. I love the fashion that's all about the midriff, like Kim Kardashian, but I don't want to show that. But I still want to be cute when I go out."

The Katies have already lined up a slate of special events—they installed a living room-inspired seating area complete with full bar in the middle of the store just for this purpose. This week, for example, look for trunk shows from locals JulieBeth Handbags and Betty Audish Accessories on March 4-5.
