Jennifer Welker worked as a neonatal nurse at the ICU at Children's Memorial Hospital before founding her jewelry line, Golden Thread, so she knows how agonizing a serious illness can be not only for the person suffering but for their loved ones as well.
After five years of building Houston-based Golden Thread from a side hustle into a nationally recognized brand—her pieces have been worn by Taylor Swift, Pippa Middleton and Lupita Nyong'o, among others—Welker has partnered with a big-name charity to create jewelry that serves a beautiful cause.
Golden Thread is now the exclusive jewelry partner for Stand Up To Cancer, and Welker has designed 13 necklaces, earrings and rings for the Hollywood-based nonprofit—and through the end of the year, 20 percent of the purchase price goes to SU2C, which funds "dream teams" of scientists who collaborate across multiple fields and disciplines to accelerate the pace of cancer research.
Many of the pieces are based on her existing bestselling pendant designs, but emblazoned with the charity's signature up arrow in gold, silver and diamond versions—some of the pendants can even be personalized to honor a loved one. Prices start at $75 for a small gold-plated arrow pendant necklace and range up to just under $1,000 for a wrap-around arrow ring covered in white diamonds.
Welker even got to attend the SU2C telecast event in Los Angeles last fall, where celebrities including Emma Stone, Anna Kendrick and Kristen Wiig wore her designs.
"Each piece in our SU2C Collection is symbolic of the valiant global fight to stand up and defeat cancer. Each piece is a badge to be worn by survivors and everyone who is touched by any cancer patient’s struggle," says Welker via press release. "Every one of us affected by cancer has their own journey. The collection asks the question, 'Who do you stand up for?'"
