The Latest Houston Food Hall Offering? A Barbershop.

A homegrown barbershop gets in on the food hall scene early next year.
Upscale Montrose-based barbershop The Argyle League recently announced some sweet new digs for its next location: Understory.
The bespoke salon—known for its perfect coiffures, fresh fades, and variety of handlebar mustache-bearing barbers—will occupy a 1,300-square-foot space to become the downtown food hall's first retailer not pertaining to food or beverage.
The Argyle League, which quadrupled staff at its original location to 12 barbers from just three back when it opened in Montrose in 2014, will have eight chairs here to accommodate clients during peak lunch hours when Understory is buzzing. Owner Carlos Carrillo says the new location will deliver the same amazing customer service and attention to detail, including complimentary trims between services and free booze and beer.

The Argyle League is king of cool.
“[The Argyle League’s] distinctly Houston roots and commitment to the highest standards of their craft make them an excellent addition to Understory’s dynamic range of upscale retail offerings,” said Matt Damborsky, executive vice president for Skanska USA Commercial Development in Houston. “The Argyle League is a great example of a high-end, quality Houston-grown concept, and we look forward to adding their acclaimed barber services to Understory later this year.”
In the five years since it first opened in the heart of Montrose, The Argyle League has earned devoted fans and a certain reputation: Arrows.com named it "Coolest Barbershop in the World" in 2016, and other magazines followed with accolades of their own in recent years.
The shop offers a variety of services from basic haircuts, shaves and beard trims, to the more bespoke offerings, like pre-shave lotion, hot lathers, and towel service. Oh, and did we mention the free bourbon?
The downtown digs are expected to debut early next year on the tunnel level of Understory's expansive market hall. The Argyle League will be open 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Friday; prices range from $20 beard trims and $45 precision cuts and classic shaves to $75 haircuts.
