The Best Farms Near Houston for a Family Day Out
Spring is the perfect time to visit a farm near Houston—and there are more options than most city dwellers realize. Within an hour of the city, families can spend a day among goats, sheep, horses, longhorns, and chickens; run through corn mazes; pick strawberries straight from the field; and remember what it feels like to slow down. For this mother of two, a farm day is one of the city’s best escapes—and even as the kids get older, they’re still down for the trip. Here are some of the best farms right outside Houston.
Blessington Farms
SIMONTON
Compact enough to feel manageable, this farm packs a lot into a small footprint. A tire mountain with slides, oversized plastic tubes for “rat races,” a jumping pillow, a goat yard, a camel you can feed lettuce, an aviary, gemstone mining, and hay wagon rides all compete for attention. Pick-your-own berries—strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries—are a seasonal draw, and the farm’s size makes it easy to see everything in a single visit.

Blue Heron Farm
Waller
Blue Heron Farm was already well-known to local foodies and farmers market enthusiasts before opening its beer garden in 2023. After that, it became iconic, especially when they welcomed Jeremy to the family. This anarchic sulcata tortoise is beloved on social media for his daring escapes and the beautiful salads owners Christian and Lisa Seger make for him. Families head here to play games in the garden, spend time with some adorable goats, and learn about how the farm’s signature goat cheese is made. Stop by for a drink and a snack and you may end up having to share your table with one of the many quadrupedal residents.
Dewberry Farm
Brookshire
With over 40 activities and a “Just Dew It!” slogan, Dewberry Farm leans into high-energy fun. Hay and Slide Mountains, a Ferris wheel, a train ride through the corn fields, flower picking, and barnyard animals keep younger visitors occupied for hours. The food menu features pizza, burgers, chili, corn on the cob, ice cream, legendary large jugs of lemonade, and a wine garden with a quieter corner for grown-ups. The popular spring and fall festivals and Boo-Riffic Nights will bring you back again and again.
Froberg's Farm
Alvin
A fourth-generation farm dating back to 1894, Froberg’s draws around 250,000 visitors a year and has become something of a landmark in Alvin. Pick-your-own strawberries (the crop that started it all) and sunflowers are the main draw in the spring, when the Strawberry Festival brings crowds out to the fields. In October, the Fall Festival opens the pumpkin patch. Year-round, the farm’s grocery store carries seasonal homegrown produce, and its full-service bakery handles the goodies. Giant oak trees shade the picnic tables, and the overall vibe is genuinely welcoming. Check the website to see what’s growing each month.
Old MacDonald's Farm
Humble
One of the more established farms in the Houston area, Old MacDonald’s draws between 100,000 and 125,000 visitors a year—and it’s easy to see why. The petting zoo is set up as a loop through the property, where kid-friendly favorites like goats, donkeys, cows, pigs, deer, llamas, and rabbits are within easy reach. Beyond the animals, there are pony rides, an express train, multiple playgrounds, a duck pond, picnic spots, pavilions, and even an inground swimming pool. The farm offers so much to do without being overwhelming.
Rose Therapeutic Farm
BROOKSHIRE
If the thought of baby goat cuddles makes you smile, this laid-back farm is the place. Visitors are welcome to mingle with free-range goats, sheep, and the roaming potbelly pig. Private cuddle sessions with a goat or an adorable Highland cow can be booked in advance. Check the calendar for special events and activities, such as goat yoga, pumpkin carving with goats, crafting, summer camps, and more.
Turquoise Acres Ranch
katy
An animal-lover’s oasis west of Houston, this farm is home to an impressive collection: longhorns, calves, ponies, pigs, donkeys, goats, chickens, and horses. Visitors can feed many of them by hand or book a session to help with farm chores. A large playground and spacious grounds give younger kids room to roam, and food trucks keep everyone fed. Interested in hosting a private event? Turquoise Acres Ranch features the Barn, a charming indoor reception hall, and a pool is available to rent on-site.
