RCC Debuts World’s First Dual Screen Rooftop Theater

Rooftop Cinema Club introduces new viewing experience plus a handful of renovations.

Rooftop Cinema Club will unviel it's second screen in March.

Between a pandemic and the advent of home streaming services, the time-honored tradition of going to see a movie in a theater almost didn’t survive. In fact, numerous AMC and Regal Cinemas closed amid bankruptcies. Thankfully, the Rooftop Cinema Club, which opened in 2018 in Uptown, has endured.

Houston’s warm weather in the spring and summer made the RCC the ideal place to catch a flick. And since its introduction, the theater has gained popularity by showing a list of classics like Dirty Dancing, Selena, Mean Girls, and Pretty Woman. Recently the theater announced that its Uptown location will be the world’s first-ever two-screen rooftop movie theater.

In a statement, Rooftop Cinema Club founder Gerry Cottle, calls Houston a “special place” and says he’s excited to provide the city with its first dual rooftop screen. “After working on this project for many months, this new development will allow us to bring new content and opportunities to Houston,” Cottle said.

The second screen, called Screen 2, is set to make its debut in March. The original screen, Screen 1, is a vibrant LED screen, and Screen 2 will display movies with their “state-of-the-art” Digital Cinema Package (DCP) projector, where films will start after sundown. The new screen unveiling is big news for the cinema club, as it means ticket holders can expect more recent releases still in theaters.

The RCC expansion makes room for more guests, too. With the rooftop theater now split between two screens, the second screen boasts 186 seats, while the first has 198. Adirondack chairs and loveseats complement the two screening areas, plus a revamped lounge area. Before a movie begins, patrons can enjoy lawn games, concessions and snacks, beer, wine, cocktails, and awe-inspiring views of Houston’s skyline.

Thursday, March 2 marks the first presentation of the second screen, and there’s already a lineup of films for the day, including the horror film M3GAN, and the star-studded comedy 80 for Brady. Moviegoers can start planning their visits to the RCC as the theater has already released its March and April schedule for Screen 1, which will pay homage to “momentous moments in the film industry,” plus themed nights and weeks, including “Awards Week,” Women’s History Month, and Y2K Tuesdays.

Rooftop Cinema Club is located at 1700 Post Oak Blvd. For more information and tickets, visit the website.
