As much as I love racing to a restaurant after work in rush hour traffic to catch the tail end of happy hour, the restaurants that offer a reverse happy hour make my life so much easier. Aka Sushi House's famous happy hour features discounted prices on sushi, hot grilled dishes, and cocktails every Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. until closing and all day on Saturdays and Sundays. Now that is a happy hour schedule I can work with.

While the quaint space on West Alabama in Upper Kirby is typically packed with diners during lunch and dinner, it is during the famous happy hour hours where you will no doubt find yourself waiting for a table. With a vast menu of happy hour selections, sushi is only the tip of the iceberg.

Beer starts at $2.5o, while wines by the glass and well drinks are only $4.75. Signature cocktails like the lychee blossom or the sake sangria start at $5 and are excellent for pairing with fresh sashimi or nigiri. The small bites menu is where we truly hit the jackpot during happy hour, though. Juicy choices like the mango crab hoppers or the kurobuta sausage start at $3.25, while a variety of vegetarian dishes like the agedashi tofu and vegetable tempura start at $4.

Traditional sushi rolls like the spicy tuna, the shrimp crunchy, the Philadelphia, and the Rock & Roll all fall under the $6 mark, while a sushi bar sampler with your choice of salmon, tuna, hamachi, albacore, or white fish is no more than $10. Don't let the happy hour friendly prices fool you, Aka's menu does not disappoint in the way of freshness or flavor. From small bites to sushi, dishes are skillfully crafted with quality ingredients.

In addition to the daily happy hour specials on food and cocktails, guests can take advantage of half off bottles of wine or sake on Tuesday, making it one of the most popular weekdays to venture in. And as happy hour prices are honored all day on Saturday and Sunday, you can indeed get the most bang for your buck for lunch or dinner at this little sushi house.

Aka Sushi House is located at 2390 W. Alabama St., 713-807-7875, akasushihouse.com.
