Fat Tuesday. Valentine's Day. National Pizza Day. Eat Like a Pirate Day. Fine, I made one of those up, but the simple fact is that February is loaded with reasons to eat out. It's also heavy on food news. Here's the latest:
- BCK: Kitchen & Cocktail Adventures is in their soft opening phase, with the official opening date being February 21. Things to look forward to on the menu are the Sweet & Sour Meatballs, Shake ‘N Bake Pork Chop and Berry Crunch Milk Punch, featuring Buffalo Trace whiskey and Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries.
- Sometime in the next 48 hours Kenny & Ziggy are going to serve up their 2,000,000th matzo ball. Will you be the lucky one to win a $100 gift certificate and “My Matzo Balls are Bigger than Yours!” shirt? We wish you the best of luck.
- Aqui's Paul Qui had his date in court on domestic violence charges reset to May 1. (H/T Chron.com)
- More food options are headed to The Post Oak. Joining Mastro’s Steakhouse and Willie G’s Seafood will be Craft F&B (elevated pub bites and comfort food), Bloom & Bee (fine dining with a pasta heavy menu), H Bar (vintage cocktail environment) and Bouchée Patisserie. (H/T Eater Houston)
- If hitting the street in your underwear isn't quite your speed, the 2018 Cupid's Crawl Pub Run is also taking place this weekend. Benefiting Friends For Life, the only LEED-certified, no-kill animal shelter in Houston, the run hits five spots along Washington Avenue, and runners can grab a brew at each spot.
- From the folks that brought you Balls Out Burger comes Poitín. Opening at Sawyer Yards, it's named after Ireland's version of moonshine, and a less extreme version of the alcohol will be used in some of the drinks. (H/T Houston Food Finder)
- While the Rodeo is still a few weeks away, the Karbach Cook-Off is a good way to get into the Rodeo spirit a little early. Taking place on February 10 in East Downtown, the cook-off benefits the Houston Fire Department and will feature performances from Big & Rich, Cowboy Troy and Cam, among others. Due to the potential for severe weather tomorrow, the Cook-Off has been postponed.
- Bosscat Kitchen + Libations launched their happy hour program this week, which includes $6 bites and $5 well drinks, house wine and Texas draft beers. Happy hour takes place Monday through Friday, 3–6 p.m.
- If you'll allow me to indulge in some personal sadness, I just want to give a shout out to the folks at EVO Taco in Westchase, which closed last month. Not only was their fried chicken taco was one of my favorite dishes in the city, but EVO is where I ate dinner the night the Astros won the World Series. I was looking forward to eating there again on Opening Day 2018. Alas.
